07 Ephesians 1:18-23 A Pastor's Prayer Part 2
Title: “A Pastor’s Prayer” Part 2 Text: Ephesians 1:18-23 FCF: We often struggle to recognize our need of God to know Him and our relationship to Him. Prop: Because knowing God intimately leads us to recognize our need of Him, we must seek the Spirit for wisdom and revelation. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Ephesians chapter 1. In a moment we’ll read from the Legacy Standard Bible starting in verse 15. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. Last week Paul began his third sentence in the book. He brings the conversation to a much more personal level by expressing his prayer for the Ephesian church. He thanks God every time He remembers them in prayer because of what God has done for them and what God is continuing to do for them. And his prayer is one we might expect of any pastor worth his office. That they would, through the Spirit, know Him accurately and intimately. Today, Paul will reveal what the purpose or result of knowing God accurately will produce in their lives. By extension, we will see what an accurate and intimate knowledge of God will mean for us, and how we might come to such knowledge. Please stand with me to give honor to and to focus on the Word of God as it is read. Invocation: Omnipotent Father, You dwell in unapproachable light. You are hidden from our eyes. Though the light of nature and reason can show us some of who You are, ultimately, we cannot know You accurately and intimately without You revealing Yourself to us. In this place, we are humbled. So Father we plead with You, through Your Spirit, make Yourself known to us today. Help us to know You accurately and intimately. Convince us of our relationship to You and all that that entails, so that we might be what You have purposed us to be. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] “When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him.” C.S. Lewis “God hath in Himself all power to defend you, all wisdom to direct you, all mercy to pardon you, all grace to enrich you, all righteousness to clothe you, all goodness to supply you, and all happiness to crown you.” Thomas Brooks [Slide 3] “Our theology is never right till in our hearts we invest God with infinite power and perfections.” William Plumer “Our love of God will always be according to our knowledge of Him and His perfections.” Thomas Wilson Let these thoughts pour over us as we seek the Lord to reveal Himself to us this morning. I.) Knowing God intimately leads us to recognize what is our hope, our value, and our strength, so we must seek the Lord for His Spirit of wisdom and revelation. (18-19) a. [Slide 4] 18 - so that you i. Verse 18 actually opens with the phrase after this, but for clarity the LSB has brought forward the prepositional phrase here to help us understand that it connects to the previous thought from verse 17. ii. Paul seeks God to send His Spirit of wisdom and revelation to the Ephesian church to accurately and intimately know the Father. iii. What follows then will be the purpose of knowing God accurat

06 Ephesians 1:15-17 A Pastor's Prayer Part 1
Title: “A Pastor’s Prayer” Part 1 Text: Ephesians 1:15-17 FCF: We often struggle growing in our faith in perceivable ways. Prop: Because God’s redemptive plan continues to work in true believers, we must continue to grow. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Ephesians chapter 1. In a moment we will read from the Legacy Standard bible starting in verse 15. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. Last week we closed out the second sentence of the book of Ephesians. I know I had mentioned that I would perhaps, do a final sermon over the entire sentence, but I think, I hope, I was able to keep all the thoughts together last week and we got the broader picture of Paul’s opening doxological eulogy. So rather than go over it again, I think we are free to move on. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately depending on how you see it, we face ANOTHER long sentence to complete chapter 1. In our English classes, we are taught that a paragraph isn’t complete unless there are at least 4 sentences. I don’t think modern English Grammar rules take into account Paul’s sentences. 😊 Verses 15 through 23 are, again, one sentence in Greek. Fortunately, it is not nearly as long and the themes here are, in some ways, a recapitulation of what we’ve already seen. Today we will bite off what is essentially the introduction to the sentence’s main idea, and then next week we will look at some of or the rest of the sentence. I’m not actually sure how much I’ll try to cover next week. But today we get to see Paul’s heart as a pastor. We get to see his compassion and love for the Ephesian church. We get to see his desire for them to know God more. Every Shepherd desires this for their flock. I can confidently say that this is the prayer of every Elder here… for you. So, let’s get into it. Please stand with me to give honor to and to focus on the Word of God as it is read. Invocation: Faithful Father, You have done all to save us. Therefore, we are not our own, we have been bought with a price. Because we belong to You, our future, our life, is Yours. And You will not abandon us. You have given us Your Spirit and You have ensured that we will grow. My prayer, Loving Father, is that You will continue to grow us in our love for other believers, that You will continue to help us to endure in our faith, that You will continue to give Your Spirit’s wisdom and revelation to us to know You more accurately, so that we may worship and serve You rightly. I pray this in Jesus’ name… Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] “Let us not cease to do the utmost, that we may incessantly go forward in the way of the Lord; and let us not despair because of the smallness of our accomplishments.” John Calvin “True saving faith clings to Christ and His Word, regardless of the consequences caused by that faith.” Henry Mahan [Slide 3] “As soon as the love of God was shed abroad in my soul I loved all, of whatsoever denomination, who loved the Lord Jesus in sincerity of heart.” George Whitefield “The fact beats ceaselessly into my brain these days that there is a world of difference between knowing the Word of God and knowing the God of the Word.” Leonard Ravenhill [Slide 4] “When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him.” C.S. Lewis “There is n

05 Ephesians 1:11-14 Claimed and Branded
Title: Claimed and Branded Text: Ephesians 1:11-14 FCF: We often struggle praising God for His work in our salvation. Prop: Because we have been claimed and sealed as God’s possession through faith, we must praise Him. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Ephesians chapter 1. In a moment we’ll begin reading from the New English Translation starting in verse 11. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. As Paul began this sentence in verse 3, he ascribes praise to God the Father who has blessed believers with every spiritual blessing. And the Spiritual blessings He gives that make all other blessings possible are first on the list for praise. By predestining them to adoption as sons, God chose, before the foundation of the world, individuals to be united to Christ. Because of this union to Christ we have, right now, redemption and forgiveness of sins through Christ’s atoning death on the cross, and we are included in a great cosmic plan of God to put all things under Christ. The response Paul demands to all of this is the praise of the glorious grace of God. But Paul is not quite finished describing spiritual blessings we should praise God for. Paul has talked about what God did before the creation of the world. He has talked about what we have now. He has talked about what is coming. Now Paul will share what God has done to us to change us, how we are united to this destiny God has for us, and how we will know we are His. Let’s look at the text this morning. Please stand with me to give honor to and to focus on the Word of God as it is read. Invocation: Gracious and loving Father. All things that occur, happen according to your wise deliberate will. You are in absolute control of your creation and that includes the redemption and possession of your people. Though we may wrestle to understand how all this works, we must praise You for Your powerful and sovereign hand in bringing it about. Bring to bear upon us the certainty of Your Word today. May we humble ourselves before it and submit to what it teaches and to obey its commands to praise You. For You are worthy of praise. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] “The Holy Spirit is the heavenly Lover’s engagement ring given to us.” Michael Green “The Holy Spirit is the only authenticator of Christianity.” Arthur P. Johnson [Slide 3] “The ultimate answer to the insecurity or security of the believer rests on the question of who does the work of salvation.” Lewis Sperry Chafer “An inheritance is not only kept for us, but we are kept for it.” Richard Sibbes Let these words help to guide us in our exposition of the text this morning. I.) We were predestined and claimed as God’s possession in Christ, so we must praise Him. a. [Slide 4] 11 - In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession, i. The NET does a great job at translating this text, but I still need to point out what they’ve done and why it is a good thing. ii. First, the Greek text opens this verse with the phrase “in whom” which is really a modification on the phrase we’ve seen over and over again, “in Him” 1. Our difficulty throughout this sentence has been the pron
