Cancer prevention begins long before a diagnosis with access to trusted primary care, recommended screenings and timely follow-up.
In this episode of Community Health Centers Unfiltered, host Amanda Pears Kelly speaks with Katie McMahon, MPH, Principal of Policy Development–Prevention at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. They explore what effective cancer prevention looks like in practice, why many patients still miss lifesaving screenings and how Medicaid coverage and other public policies influence prevention and early detection.
The conversation also highlights the essential role community health centers play as the front door to cancer prevention, helping patients overcome barriers, addressing disparities and connecting people with care before a health concern becomes a crisis.

S2 E13: How Trust Shapes Better Care
Season 2, Episode 14: How Trust Shapes Better Care
Trust is essential to effective health care, but it can be difficult to build and easy to lose, particularly among patients who have experienced discrimination or felt unseen by the healthcare system.
In this episode, ACH CEO Amanda Pears Kelly speaks with Naseema Shafi, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health in Washington, DC, about how creating spaces where patients feel seen, heard, and treated with dignity can improve access, engagement, and health outcomes.
For more than 50 years, Whitman-Walker has served the community and helped shape patient-centered care, from its leadership during the HIV epidemic to its work today as a nationally recognized provider, researcher, educator, and advocate.
Shafi discusses how that history continues to inform Whitman-Walker’s approach, how the organization integrates care delivery with research and advocacy, and what health centers must do every day to earn their communities’ trust. She also examines the financial, workforce, and policy pressures threatening access to community-based care and the changes needed to help health centers continue meeting patients where they are.
