[…] The celebrations at San Rocco became one of the most renowned and spectacular events of the Venetian calendar, one which must have rivalled even those marking the feast day of the city's revered patron saint, Mark himself. Most of the Scuoli Grandi employed permanent groups of singers of ten or so. For the major feast days they'd employ musicians from St. Mark's. There were a further two hundred minor organisations, squalli piccoli, which weren't restricted to citizens of Venice, and indeed some of them were formed specifically for foreigners, and most citizens belonged to one of these. Venice was also by this time the capital of musical publishing for the whole of Europe, and of instrument-making too. […]
