A rising average doesn't mean every generation is better off. Even so, the transformation over the last two or three centuries has been historically extraordinary. 200 years ago, about three out of every four people on earth lived in extreme poverty. Today it's about 1 in 10. So here's the question I want to explore in this episode. It isn't simply why the modern world got rich. Plenty of societies have become wealthy before.
