Black Men Matter Series: Father Wounds, Nigerian Cultural Expectations and Generational Healing | Kizito Mbaekwe
In this episode of The Male Perspective, Lana Reid sits down with Kizito Mbaekwe - MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, author of Better Than My Father and founder of Marenova Psychiatry & Wellness. Kizito reflects on growing up in Nigeria, the cultural expectations surrounding education, discipline, family responsibility, and the pressures placed on young men to succeed. Drawing from his memoir, he explores his relationship with his father and the complexities of growing up in a household where love was often expressed through provision and discipline rather than emotional affection and affirmation. He discusses how these early experiences shaped his desire for personal evolution and growth, and how that growth now influences the way he shows up as a husband and father with greater emotional presence.Kizito also shares his journey from Nigeria to the United States, the challenges of pursuing opportunities in a new country, and his path into the mental health profession. Drawing on his personal experiences and work as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, he examines the stigma surrounding mental health in African communities, the importance of recognizing inherited emotional patterns, and the challenges of breaking generational cycles while still honoring one's cultural heritage.𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝘇𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗯𝗮𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗲:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kizito-mbaekwe-777517b3https://marenovawellness.com/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GDSTLVNJhttps://www.instagram.com/marenovawellness/...𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝘁:https://linktr.ee/theladylanareid. ..𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻:Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/4019OO6Amazon Music - https://bit.ly/41UlLI2iHeart Radio - https://ihr.fm/3BOmdx4Pandora - https://bit.ly/3CezvD8Spotify - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/conversationsincolor/🔔 Want to be a guest or have a guest idea? 📝 GUEST SUBMISSION FORM: https://forms.gle/owz3k5i3xpwzsEZs6#BlackMenMatter #BlackMensMentalHealth #NigerianCulture #NigerianAmerican #FatherSonRelationships #BlackFatherhood #BreakingGenerationalCycles

Black Men Matter Series: The Audacity to Decide: Breaking Unexamined Generational Patterns | Larry C. Hill Sr.
In this episode of The Male Perspective, Lana Reid sits down with Larry C. Hill Sr. — author of The Audacity to Decide and founder of the 5230 Movement. Larry shares how his motivation for writing the book came from a conversation with his son that challenged him to look inward. His 5230 Movement helps men explore the patterns that shape how they move through life, including the inner voices and beliefs passed down to them. Larry explores how generations of men have learned to provide, protect, lead, and keep moving forward even while carrying grief, fear, uncertainty, and unresolved pain. This need to portray strength while in survival mode can begin to hide a man, leaving him simply functioning instead of healing.Drawing from his own experiences with the murder of his father, the death of his daughter, the ending of a marriage, and other life-changing losses, Larry discusses the process of examining what is happening beneath the surface and recognizing when something internally needs to pivot. Larry explains his phrase “every decision has an author” and the consequences of passing unexamined patterns from one generation to the next. He also introduces the work of the 5230 Movement, its 30-Day Pathway, and self-assessment tools while challenging men to consider an important truth: Just because something was handed down to you does not mean everything previous generations carried must be carried into the next generation.𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗖.
