Summary:Self-management is a powerful behavior-change tool, but are behavior analysts making enough use of it? In this episode of Cooperant Learning, we welcome Jamie Salter and Dr. Katie Croce, co-founders of Self & Match, to discuss the science and practical application of self-monitoring across educational, clinical, and community settings. The conversation explores the relationship between self-management and self-monitoring, including self-assessment, self-recording, and reinforcement. Jamie and Katie talk about how accountability partners can support accurate self-reflection, why learners should receive credit for honestly identifying mistakes, and how collaboratively designed interventions can improve stakeholder buy-in and accountability. The discussion also examines selecting meaningful target behaviors, teaching expectations before implementation, individualizing monitoring intervals, and systematically fading interventions to promote independence, generalization, and maintenance. From classroom behavior and executive functioning to staff performance and adult support settings, this episode highlights the versatility of self-monitoring as a tool for behavior change. Learning takeaways: Define self-management and self-monitoring from a behavior-analytic perspective. Describe the role of accountability and reinforcement in self-monitoring. Identify essential considerations for individualized intervention planning. Explain how self-monitoring can support independence and generalization. Guests Jamie currently supports teams around the globe in the development and implementation of the Self & Match System interventions as a Tier 1, 2, or 3 behavioral tool within school, clinic, or home settings. She coordinates trainings (in-person and virtually) and is available for consultation. Previously, Jamie served for a decade as a Special Education Senior Program Specialist. In that role Jamie led special educators in writing effective and legally-defensible Behavior Intervention Plans, guided special educators in program and curriculum development, and facilitated students, families, and IEP teams in selecting appropriate programs for students that best met their unique abilities. Jamie is an avid pickleball player! She loves traveling, cheering on her boys’ extracurricular activities, coffee, and completing jigsaw puzzles with her family. Katie has worked as a behavior analyst and special education program coordinator in schools, homes, and an in-patient hospital for children and adolescents with ASD/DD/ID. One of Katie’s greatest joys is developing clinic programs for individuals with ASD including social skills programs, an inclusive summer camp, a respite program, a sports program, a college-bound retreat for students with ASD interested in attending college, and a support program for college students with ASD. Katie currently works in higher education creating and teaching undergraduate and graduate course work in ASD and ABA. Those who know Katie know she is happiest when wearing Lilly Pulitzer. She is very involved with the fundraising at her kids school and cheering them on the sidelines at sporting events. She loves to travel and having her toes in the sand. Behavior Business Roundtable | Episode 9: Rookie Mistakes, Veteran Habits

What separates competent clinical decision-making from simply following a checklist? In this episode of Behavior Business Roundtable, Kyle Steury is joined by Kristen Byra,  Steve Sparks, and Taylor Barker for a wide-ranging conversation about how behavior analysts learn to make good clinical decisions, and what may be getting lost as the field grows. The panel discusses the role of literature reviews and mentorship when BCBAs encounter unfamiliar clinical problems, the difference between completing an assessment tool and actually analyzing behavior, and the risks of relying on social media for clinical recommendations. They also examine what should happen when an intervention isn't working, including treatment fidelity, measurement, reinforcement, stimulus control, environmental variables, and whether the original clinical hypothesis was correct. The panel flips the conversation around at the end and discusses "What are newer BCBAs getting right?" From greater comfort with technology to interdisciplinary collaboration and increased attention to compassionate care, the group considers what more experienced behavior analysts can learn from the next generation of practitioners. Topics include:• Literature reviews and evidence-based clinical decision-making• Mentorship and practicing within your scope of competence• Facebook and social media as sources of clinical advice• Functional assessment vs. simply completing assessment tools• Collecting useful data, not just more data• Insurance requirements and medical necessity• Treatment fidelity and troubleshooting ineffective interventions• Reinforcement, stimulus control, and implementation errors• AI in ABA and clinical decision support• Interdisciplinary collaboration• Compassionate care for clients and caregivers• What newer and more experienced BCBAs can learn from each other Behavior Business Roundtable brings experienced behavior analysts together to debate the clinical, ethical, and business issues shaping the field of applied behavior analysis. Subscribe for more conversations about ABA practice, leadership, ethics, supervision, clinical decision-making, and the future of the field.
