Coopers’ Code contains collected wisdom we’ve learned during our years practicing law. We’ve learned from, worked for, worked with, and been up against some of the best lawyers there are. Every week, Miles Cooper and a guest host use this experience to examine a legal issue and hit that issue’s key practice pointers and strategic highlights — so we can all achieve the best results for our clients.

Before the Deposition, Read Their Answers: How Special Interrogatories Can Reveal Your Best Question
A weak discovery response can still contain the fact your case needs. Miles Cooper and Corey Jollie explore how form and special interrogatories can uncover useful information, sharpen deposition questions, and help build a case well before trial.
They discuss the value of reading the forms closely, investigating business relationships and potential insurance coverage, and asking focused questions as the evidence develops. The conversation also covers supplemental interrogatories, Form Interrogatory 17.1, and client questionnaires designed to make responding to discovery more efficient.
On the receiving side, they consider compilation requests, the use of existing records, and the balance between valid objections and getting useful information exchanged. Their central point: discovery works best when each response informs the next step, and the work done early reduces the scramble as trial approaches.

Write a Complaint an Insurance Adjuster Takes Seriously: Clear Stories, Facts, and Trial Strategy
Your complaint starts telling the story long before a jury hears it. Miles Cooper and Corey Jollie explore how to make that first account clear, persuasive, and useful throughout the case. They discuss what belongs in the pleading, what needs preserving, and when extra detail can give the defense more to work with.
From Doe defendants and caption strategy to plain-language storytelling, Corey shares how he approaches complaints that insurance adjusters can understand and take seriously. They also discuss using CACI jury instructions to check the elements of a claim and connect each one to supporting allegations.
The conversation covers punitive damages, verified complaints, and the practical consequences of missing jury-fee requirements. They finish with the debate over form complaints and why thinking ahead to amendments can influence how a complaint is drafted from the start.

Requests for Admission: Lock Down the Facts, Challenge Weak Denials, and Make the Other Side Explain
Who pays when the other side makes you prove the obvious? Miles Cooper and Corey Jollie explore how requests for admission can lock in crucial facts, expose weak positions, and narrow the issues heading to trial. Corey explains why their value starts with choosing the right facts to target early.
They cover California’s 35-request limit, the evidence a denial can reveal through Form Interrogatory 17.1, and how to turn qualified deposition answers into clear admissions. They also discuss authenticating documents found through independent research and writing meet-and-confer letters with the judge in mind.
An unreasonable denial can carry a financial consequence. Miles explains how the attorney time and expert costs spent proving a disputed matter may become part of a cost-of-proof claim, and why preparing for that possibility matters even when the issue resolves before trial.
