"Once I got into video games daily logins gave me gambling boxes. Everyday I was hoping to get something good from those boxes… and I never went back."
Mental Health Counselor, Gillian Hallock, joins Screen Break to discuss many teens' favorite hobby: video games. The crew runs through the tools that video games use to keep teens addicted, coming back, and spending their hard-earned cash. Even your favorite games can be working against your mental health, and we unpack it all on this episode.
Coping 101: Screen Break is DANCE 89.5's student-hosted mental health series exploring how technology, social media, and AI are changing the way young people see themselves, connect with others, and take care of their mental health.
With support from foundry10 and presented in partnership with Forefront, each episode brings together youth voices, expert perspectives, and real-world experiences to tackle the complicated relationship between our screens and our well-being. Topics range from social media, self-esteem, and body image to device addiction, online bullying, digital empathy, and AI as a therapist.
In a world that's increasingly lived online, Coping 101: Screen Break creates space for honest conversations about what technology is doing to our mental health, and what we can do about it.

Coping 101: Allyship w/ Seattle Men's Chorus
"The CDC reports that queer youth attempt suicide at nearly three times the rate of their straight peers. About half of all queer youth report recent symptoms of depression… but there's a ray of hope. You know what stops these numbers cold? A voice. Not my voice, not our voice: your voice. When a queer kid feels threatened, or ashamed, or isolated, one expression of reassurance, kindness or support, from a non-queer peer seems so little, but that can save a life."
Seattle Men's Chorus travelled to Mercer Island High and Middle Schools with a message of Allyship that resonated off the walls of the auditorium and beyond. Seattle Men's Chorus artistic director, Paul Caldwell, joins Coping 101, along with students from Mercer Island High School, to share the impact that straight allies and peers can create in the journey towards love and acceptance.
