Sardis was a city on a hill that looked unassailable — yet twice in its history it fell, simply because nobody bothered to keep watch. Its church had a reputation for being alive, but Jesus saw something very different behind the façade. Janet remembers her grandmother's road, where every respectable household whitened its doorstep before breakfast, and asks what our own reputation really rests on. Unusually, this letter has no compliments at all — but it does have hope, and she brings it close to home with honest questions for a parish in vacancy.

Revelation Week 4: Thyatira (Revelation 2:18–29)
Thyatira still exists today as the Turkish city of Akhisar. Jesus' letter to its church opens with warm praise for their love, faith, service and perseverance — then comes the bombshell: "Nevertheless…" Andrew Hyde looks at what Thyatira had been quietly tolerating, honestly names a few of the everyday compromises that can creep into his own life, and closes by asking what the Spirit might be saying to our own church during this time of vacancy.

Revelation Week 3: Pergamum (Revelation 2:12–17)
Pergamum was a seat of Roman power, home to an enormous library and to the temples of more gods than you could count. The Christians there had held on to their faith even when one of their own, Antipas, was put to death for it — but compromise was creeping in. Stephen Mourant explores the double-edged sword, the hidden manna and the mysterious white stone, and asks how Christians today can stand firm when the culture around them pulls the other way.
