Don't Play The Revenge Game: Why Your Marriage Will Suffer

Are you fighting for your marriage, or are you slowly tearing it apart with the way you treat each other? One hurtful comment leads to another. One insult sparks another argument. Before long, two people who promised to love each other are using their words as weapons, keeping score, and allowing anger to dictate how they treat one another. But what if the answer isn't learning how to win the next argument? What if it's learning how to respond the way Christ has called you to? In this powerful episode of the Covenant Army Marriage Podcast, Brent and Lucy unpack 1 Peter 3:9 and challenge husbands and wives to stop repaying evil with evil and insults with insults. Instead, God calls us to something radically different: repay evil with blessing. Through biblical truth, real marriage counseling experiences, and practical application, we explore how destructive communication, retaliation, unresolved hurt, and uncontrolled emotions can create toxic cycles that damage intimacy and slowly destroy a marriage. But you don't have to keep living that way. Chapters 00:00 Why 1 Peter 3:9 matters in marriage 03:30 How couples get caught in cycles of hurt 06:34 Repay evil with blessing, not retaliation 09:22 Reflect Christ instead of mirroring your spouse 12:16 Lesson one: stop retaliating 16:05 Public arguments and the fuel of escalation 22:02 Romans 12:17 and the example of Jesus 25:34 How one changed response can shift a marriage 27:27 Pause and choose words that honor God 30:16 Address hard issues without tearing each other down 32:04 Build your spouse up with intentional communication 35:19 Recognize when negativity filters your spouse's words 38:27 Lesson three: repay evil with blessing 41:17 Pray for those who mistreat you 44:01 Blessing is not enabling or instant restored trust 47:06 What blessing looks like in an everyday frustration 50:11 Lesson four: live by a different standard 53:44 Take responsibility and bring light into conflict 57:18 A seven-day plan for returning blessing 01:00:29 Put faith into action together 01:02:25 Closing prayer and invitation to follow Christ 01:05:12 Find community and keep walking in faith PLUS: Your 7 Day Marriage Battle Plan We're giving you seven practical steps to start changing the atmosphere in your marriage: • Day 1: Stop the Retaliation. • Day 2: Speak Life. • Day 3: Pray Instead of Retaliating. • Day 4: Practice Humility. • Day 5: Extend Forgiveness. • Day 6: Choose Intentional Kindness. • Day 7: Recommit to God's Standard. When Your Husband’s World Collapses (And You Fall With Him)

What happens when your husband loses everything, and you’re losing the strength to stand beside him? When tragedy strikes, grief takes over, and the life you built together begins to crumble, will your marriage become another casualty, or will you turn toward God and fight for your covenant? In this powerful episode of the Covenant Army Marriage Podcast, Brent and Lucy explore the often overlooked story of Job’s wife and the devastating suffering she may have experienced alongside her husband. While the Bible tells us much about Job’s faith and trials, it gives us only a brief glimpse into his wife’s response. But that single moment raises a critical question for every husband and wife: What happens to your faith, your words, and your marriage when the pain becomes almost too much to bear? Brent and Lucy also share a practical Marriage Battle Plan to help couples recognize each other’s pain, guard their words, turn toward God, hold each other accountable with grace, and carry their burdens together. Job’s story reminds us that even when life does not make sense, God is still God. His faithfulness does not depend on our circumstances, and our suffering does not have to define the future of our marriage. The question is not whether your marriage will face difficult seasons. The question is what those seasons will produce in your covenant. Will suffering drive you apart, or will you learn to seek God together, fight for one another, and stand firm in your faith? Listen today and be encouraged to fight for your covenant instead of allowing pain to turn you against each other. Chapters 00:00 Why they’re looking at Job’s story through his wife’s perspective 08:24 Suffering in a marriage affects both spouses 10:11 Job’s losses and the challenge of praising God 15:15 Why spouses can experience the same crisis differently 22:20 How pain can distort perspective 30:29 Your spouse is not your enemy 35:03 Faithfulness does not mean hiding grief 38:13 Ask for wise support instead of suffering alone 44:31 A painful season does not have to define the future 58:47 The couple’s five-part battle plan 01:01:01 Questions for couples facing hardship 01:02:21 Prayer, faith, and the closing encouragement 📖 Key Scriptures: Job 1:13–22, Job 2:9–10, Job 42:10–17, and Galatians 6:2. The Truth About Submission: It Isn’t Just For Her

What does biblical submission really look like in marriage? In this powerful episode of the Covenant Army Marriage Podcast, Brent and Lucy unpack Ephesians 5:21 and challenge husbands and wives to confront pride, embrace humility, and submit to one another out of reverence for Jesus Christ. Drawing from their own marriage struggles, they reveal how the desire to be right, the need to be heard, and the refusal to humble ourselves can create division in even a strong marriage. Discover why mutual submission is a responsibility for both spouses, how sacrificial love and respect strengthen your covenant, and how prayer, repentance, and biblical communication help couples resolve conflict and protect their unity. Plus, get a practical 7 day marriage challenge to help you put God's Word into action. Your marriage is not a competition to win. It is a covenant to protect. Stop keeping score. Surrender your pride, seek Christ, and learn to fight for your marriage instead of fighting each other. Key Scriptures: Ephesians 5:21, Ephesians 5:33, Philippians 2:3–4, and James 1:19.
