About Create and Connect Podcast

Welcome to Create and Connect, the podcast that brings you into the world of makers—woodworkers, metal fabricators, leather craftsmen, and artists of all kinds—people who don’t just make things, they make meaning. I’m your host, Tom Breslin, the face behind The Phoenix Woodshop. I create custom CNC-machined flags to honor the service of firefighters, police officers, and military service members. Each flag is a one-of-a-kind tribute, made to connect with the individual receiving it. I consider it a privilege to tell their stories through wood and craftsmanship. This show is about stories like that—about creators who use their hands and hearts to build something bigger than themselves.

   Episode 27 Ryan Smith @smith_makes

Ryan Smith @smith_makes (www.instagram.com/smith_makes) Ryan Smith of SmithMakes has become a prominent figure in the maker community, known for his diverse talents ranging from woodworking to printmaking. In this blog post, we’ll explore Ryan’s journey, the evolution of his craft, and the lessons he's learned along the way. Ryan’s journey into the world of making began unexpectedly. Initially, he was asked by his sister to create a dining room table, a project that ignited his passion for woodworking. "When she said, Can you make me this, you know, I think it's a ten-foot table, which I just restored ... it was a pine table, so there were knife marks and forks and crayons and everything else," Ryan recalls. This request led him to create more furniture, transitioning from small projects to significant pieces, which eventually turned into a full-blown passion. Before woodworking, Ryan was deeply involved in music, playing guitar and piano. However, as he delved deeper into woodworking, he found himself dedicating more time to crafting than to music. "Once I got into the different tools and stuff, I kind of got hooked," he admits. This shift highlights how creative outlets can evolve, leading individuals to new paths they never imagined. ### The Maker Community Ryan's connection to the maker community solidified through online platforms and events. "I was definitely involved, you know, watching all the YouTube stuff at that time because I was a social worker," he states. The ability to learn from others and share experiences has been a crucial aspect of his development. His involvement at Maker Camp allowed him to connect with fellow makers, leading to collaborations and friendships that enriched his journey. ### Lessons Learned and Inspiration As Ryan navigated through challenges in woodworking, he learned valuable lessons. "There's no teacher like experience," he reflects. The importance of hands-on learning and continuous improvement has been a guiding principle in his work. Ryan draws inspiration from various artists within the community, especially Bobby Rosenstock, who inspires him to push his creative boundaries. His admiration for others’ skills fuels his desire to improve and innovate in his craft. ### The Role of Generosity in the Maker Community Ryan's story is also one of generosity. He received a rolling print machine from Jimmy Diresta, a significant moment that transformed his printmaking journey. "He said, Just come take this one. I can't... I don't have time for it. It's yours if you want it," Ryan shares. This act of kindness exemplifies the supportive nature of the maker community, where sharing resources and experiences fosters growth and creativity. ### Conclusion Ryan Smith's journey in the maker community illustrates the power of creativity, community, and continuous learning. From humble beginnings crafting furniture for family to becoming a respected printmaker, his story inspires aspiring makers to embrace their passions and connect with others. As you explore your own creative path, remember the value of community support and the importance of sharing knowledge. Tips for Maker Camp from Tom

Here are a few tips while attending The Castskill Mountain Maker Camp 2026. Be properly dressed! That means have PPE (personal protective equipment). Eye protection is a must! Hearing protection, gloves, boots (with steel toes), head cover and maybe a dust mask are all suggested depending on your activity. A bandana is always helpful as a face covering, a rag or just as a handkerchief. If you are new, there are many makers who swap stickers if you are interested. You sticker may be your logo or your Instagram handle or your contact info. Not required but fun. to trade. Maintain your health! Stay hydrated! Have lots of water and electrolytes. Be sure to eat when necessary so you do not become "hangry". Keep you medication close especially if you are diabetic, have food allergies, bee allergies or just under a care of a doctor!!! Sun protection is important while out in the field. Dress appropriately for the weather. It can be very hot, very cold even very wet. Plan accordingly. Sun block, hat, extra clothes and even rain clothes are good ideas. If you are interested in gathering with Friends of Bill W. then please reach out to me Tom @the_phoenix_woodshop or Adam @uncle_sam_metalworks
