How to Turn an Acquaintance Into an Actual Friend

How do you turn an acquaintance into an actual friend? You might see someone at work, church, the gym, or a regular event every week, genuinely like them, and still never become friends.Making friends as an adult takes more intentional effort because the environments that once brought us together naturally aren't always part of our lives anymore. In this episode, I'm breaking down how to move from acquaintance to friendship, including:Why proximity matters more than we realizeHow to become a regular somewhere and meet people consistentlyThe small interactions that turn acquaintances into friendsWhy spending time together outside your shared activity mattersHow to get beyond surface-level small talkHow to initiate a friendship without feeling like you're chasing someoneHow to recognize when someone is reciprocating your effortWe'll also look at research on how many hours it takes to form friendships, the liking gap, and why two people can genuinely like each other but never take the next step.Because sometimes the difference between an acquaintance and a friend is simply creating one more opportunity to spend time together.WATCH NEXT: How to Make Friends as an Adult Without Feeling Awkwardhttps://youtu.be/U4yoDyXpJQEI speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection, learn more or inquire here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speakerOr email me at Cass@cassthompson.comWant to reach out but not sure what to say? Working From Home Was Making My Life Smaller

Working from home was making my life smaller. So I started paying nearly $400 a month for a coworking space—even though I already have a home office. After about three months, is it worth it? Here’s what actually changed in my productivity, energy, and social connection—and what joining a coworking space didn’t fix.I expected to go four days a week and follow a regular office schedule. Instead, I found that focused afternoons, small conversations, and having somewhere else to go mattered more than spending a full workday there. In this video, I share:• Why home had stopped feeling like a place to relax• What I expected from coworking versus what actually helped• How small, everyday interactions changed how my days felt• Why being around people doesn’t automatically create friendship• How to try your own experiment without paying for a membershipYou might enjoy alone time. I do too. But does that time leave you rested and ready to participate—or flatter and more inclined to avoid people? If you work remotely or spend most of your days at home, try changing your environment for a day. Say hello to one person. Then notice what changes in your productivity, energy, and mood. What do you notice about yourself after a few days working from home? Tell me in the comments.ABOUT CASSANDRAI speak to organizations about workplace connection, relationship-building, and the practical people skills that help employees communicate better, build trust, collaborate more easily, and create stronger professional relationships. If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection and communication at work, learn more about my speaking programs here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speakerSpeaking inquiries:Cass@cassthompson.comFREE RESOURCEWant to reach out to someone but have no idea what to say?Get my FREE “But What Do I Say?!?” Connection Messages Guidebook with ready-to-use language for starting conversations, following up, and staying in touch:https://www.cassthompson.com/connectionSHOP MY FAVORITESSee the books, gear, office finds, and other things I actually use and recommend:https://www.amazon.com/shop/cassthompsonSome links may be affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them at no additional cost to you.#WorkingFromHome #Coworking #SocialConnection

Why Everyone Feels Socially Rusty Now

If talking to people feels harder than it used to, you may not suddenly be “bad with people.” You may simply be out of practice. We’re spending less time with friends, having fewer face-to-face conversations, interacting less during the workday, and replacing thousands of tiny social interactions with apps, delivery, self-checkout, texting, and screens. In this episode, I break down why so many of us feel socially rusty, what disappearing everyday interactions have done to our social confidence, and why waiting until you “feel confident” before becoming more social gets the process backwards. Because social confidence works a lot like physical conditioning: the confidence comes after the reps. In this episode: • Why ordinary social interactions used to keep our people skills sharp • What happened to our everyday “social reps” • Why texting and digital communication aren't the same practice as real-time conversation • How remote and hybrid work changed one of our biggest sources of social interaction • Why discomfort does not mean you're socially awkward • The tiny social reps that can help you feel comfortable talking to people again 00:00 Why Everyone Feels Awkward00:58 My Coworking Wake-Up Call02:05 We Spend Less Time With Friends03:12 We Speak Fewer Words Now05:01 Lost Everyday Social Reps06:50 Remote Work Removed Practice09:01 Why We Need People Less for Fun11:34 Social Skills Build Confidence13:29 Tiny Reps to Start Today14:45 Final Push and Next Video I speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.
