S1, Episode #5: Listening to Our Own Voice
When we want to connect with our intuition, voice and true self, it is important that we develop a willingness to practice listening. This can sometimes feel impossible to do in our lives of constant input. Especially from people-centered technologies that keep shouting their loud messages to gain our attention. On today’s podcast I’m inviting you to quiet that constant noise by asking you to make room to listen. I also share a poem of mine at the end of the episode as well as reflection prompts to help you process. Please follow this link to access this episode’s reflection and writing prompts! (https://michellewiegers.substack.com/p/prompts-for-listening-to-our-own) Making room to hear your own thoughts, to listen to your voice, to check in with your body’s intuition and felt sense helps us get to know and understand ourselves more deeply. I hope you’ll make room to listen to yourself this week! Please feel free to share in the comments section ways you already listen to yourself, or possibly something new you’d like to try. Please consider sharing this episode to help my new podcast grow! I hope you’ll join us at my free Creating Space Mini Retreat is this coming Thursday, October 29, from 3pm-5pm ET! Poem: Slow Down by Michelle Wiegers
I shared this poem during, S1 Ep. #4 Rushing Through or Being Present, found here (https://michellewiegers.substack.com/p/s1-episode-4-rushing-through-or-being). My poem Slow Down was originally published in The Wonder of Small Things, edited by James Crews, which won the 2024 New England Book Award for Poetry. Slow Downby Michelle Wiegers This morning I’m so tiredfrom pushing myself hard, that as I drive down this country roadI can’t bring myself to go anywhere close to the speed limit.I feel like a silver haired ladypeeking over my steering wheelas I creep along, letting the cars whiz by me.I always assume the elderlygo slowly because they’re cautious, not wanting to hit anyone or miss the ambulanceracing down the road with siren blaring. But maybe they’ve figured outa secret that I’m still trying to learn. What if driving slowlyis the only wayto live my best life,to keep from running so fast that I go right past myself?Running by the small child insidewho seeks to fill herself with wonder, passing up the chance for rest, for play, to slow myselflong enough to noticehow pleasant the rain soundsdripping onto the roof of the house next door, tiny wet whispers tappingthose few remaining leavesclinging to the maple in my backyard,an almost silent thrummingslowing down my weary soul. The steady chime of church bells ringingin the distance, in this moment, reminding me, I’ve alreadybeen given all that I need. S1 Episode #4: Rushing Through or Being Present?
You are invited to my FREE Live Creating Space Mini Retreat on Thursday, October 29, 2026! Register here (https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8). https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8 (https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8) Last week’s episode #3 (https://michellewiegers.substack.com/p/season-1-ep-3-permission-to-grow)focused on giving ourselves the space and time we need to become our true selves. Connecting with our deeper selves is often a process, so it can be important that we let ourselves grow slowly. This week’s podcast, “Rushing Through or Being Present” (Season 1 Episode #4) helps us take this idea and apply it to our use of time. I encourage you to think about your pace with yourself and in your life. Because our default pace deeply affects us. Releasing the need to rush through our days actually increases calm, regulation and peace. But when we’re moving too fast, we can sometimes increase anxiety, stress or physical tension in our bodies. So today I’m inviting you into a more self-compassionate pace, one that gives you all the space you need to live from the center of who you are. Today I also share three somatic practices and my poem, “Slow Down.” These will help you practice being present with yourself right inside of this episode! I encourage you to listen and try the exercises for yourself this week. You can always return to them again on the “Prompts & Practices” section of my substack. I’ll also be sharing this week’s writing prompts on that page too. Please join me at our first live Creating Space Mini Retreat on Thursday, October 29, 2026. There is no cost for this mini retreat. Please register here at this link! (https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8) https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8 (https://forms.gle/tssbZKd29UTEEpDp8) Thanks for listening! Season 1, Ep. #3: Permission to Grow Slowly
Whether we’re moving through a transition in life or trying to establish a more aligned rhythm or pace, giving ourselves permission to grow slowly can be incredibly life-giving. I find rushing quickly through a task or life transition only seems to increase anxiety and self-pressure. The truth is becoming who we are takes time. In today’s episode I share some “growing slowly” metaphors right out of my own yard. You’ll get a few glimpses into my early summer garden, even though the episode is coming out here in the fall. I learn so much about myself and my life through my explorations in nature. And in this episode I am inviting you into that journey with me. I also share a poem of mine, where I am practicing changing the words I speak over myself, in order to release fear and invite a more aligned way of being inside my own life. I hope you’ll find encouragement today to create space for nurturing and caring for yourself. Knowing that for many of us going slowly is the only way to access the deeper work we want to bring into this world. Maybe giving ourselves permission to grow slowly is exactly what we need. Season 1, Episode 2: Be You To Fly
Want to explore Creating Space for yourself? Find my Reflection Prompts for this episode here! (https://michellewiegers.substack.com/p/s1-ep2-prompts-be-you-to-fly-free) In Episode #2 I invite you into the process of starting this new podcast, which is itself a creative project where I’m deciding to let go and see where this project takes us. I really want to be more free with myself and in my creative life, so I am letting go of needing a clear plan in order to let the project itself lead us. I will definitely be sharing some of my poetry and writing and I also hope to share my story of recovering from chronic pain and neuroplastic symptoms, codependency and PTSD. We will also be talking about how giving our voice and creativity a central place in our lives opens deep inner healing within us. But really what I’m here for is to let us all be free to be and become who we are. For me, this means Creating Space. This is really an intentional life practice of self-attunement, guided by a lot of kindness and self-compassion. All we need to be free in our lives is to give ourselves permission to be who we already are. I’m excited to be on this journey with you. Let’s see where it brings us! Thanks for joining me today! Season 1, Episode 1: Getting Started
Creating Space reflection prompts for this episode can be found here. (https://michellewiegers.substack.com/p/s1-ep1-reflection-and-writing-prompts) I am so thrilled to be launching my new podcast Creating Space today! In this episode, you’ll learn how this podcast idea came to me and how I spent years avoiding episode ideas when they surfaced in my daily writing practice. Even though dozens of ideas were coming to me, I ignored them because I wanted to finish my memoir first, not start a podcast! Because I thought a podcast would distract me from the hard work of editing my book. It turns out, I wanted to finish my book and start this podcast! After multiple attempts to start, here we are finally beginning. And as you’ll hear in this “Getting Started” episode, in order to make it to this point, I needed to first learn how to create space in my own life. I’ve got so much to share about that, here on the podcast and in some new offerings I’m making for us to experience together. What a crazy journey I’ve been on over these last three or four years. And I can’t wait to tell you more about that process. What I’ve found in these years is that Creating Space isn’t just a podcast, it’s a life practice. So listen in to hear my crazy story of this podcast’s beginning. And as I start, I’d love your help to spread the word. Would you consider sharing this episode with a few friends? You could also leave a comment or review on my substack or wherever you listened to this episode. Thanks for helping me share this life-changing practice with even more listeners! Introducing the Creating Space Podcast!
My story is one of recovering from almost three decades of chronic pain and conditions that I thought were permanent. The root? Physically REAL symptoms fueled by stress and emotion shut down in my body. And I also discovered that being disconnected from my true self was fueling my chronic shut down. In 2017, when I was releasing decades of pain, my creative voice began to explode into my life, primarily through writing poetry and stories. My regular writing practice helped me get present with myself and my voice, deepening my healing experience. Through it all I learned one central and vital lesson–creating space for ourselves changes everything. In my new podcast, Creating Space, I’ll share stories, poetry, and inspiration for becoming our true selves. This is a process we’ll create together. So I hope you’ll join in by subscribing, sharing episodes with friends and contributing your perspective in the comments. And there’s much more to come. I can’t wait to share reflection prompts, embodied practices and even some live creating space experiences. Let’s become ourselves together as we free our voices, creativity and authentic selves.
