How to Grow and Fund Your Music Career

Do you wish your secret or hidden talent was known? Are you trying to figure out how to dovetail your skills into artistic fulfillment and a growing, adoring fan base? In this episode of The David Andrew Wiebe Show, David answers a very awkwardly worded audience question. The essence of it was, “How do I promote and fund my music career?” David covers the essentials you need, as well as the duplicatable steps you can take to approach and convert prospective sponsors or investors. In This Episode: 3 keys to establishing your online presence How to pick a website builder Why you should focus on one or two social networks at a time The power of a lead generation magnet in generating an email list 8 types of people you should know in the music business How relationships form the foundation of your career growth Why you might need to spend some time in the trenches before you go out on the battlefield How to set up a three-tier investor/sponsor incentive package How David signed 2/3 sponsors for Clean Slate (66% conversion rate) Why developing your knowledge is about depth rather than breadth Key Resources: The Renegade Musician: Step out of the shadow of the old music career model Transcription: Are you trying to figure out how to fund your music career? Are you unsure how to get your music out into the world, or would you like to find support from investors and sponsors? In this video, I cover the step-by-step process I used to approach sponsors for Clean Slate Victoria, which resulted in a 66% conversion rate. A subscriber recently asked me how to find sponsors who can support an artist's career rather than keeping talent hidden. While the phrasing was unique, the underlying intention is clear: musicians need to know how to market their work and secure real backing. The first step is establishing your digital foundation across three non-negotiable components: First, an owned website. Choose a self-hosted platform like WordPress that you can install on your own server, giving you long-term control of your asset. Second, a focused social media presence. While it is wise to secure your brand name across every platform, you should actively focus on only one or two. You cannot simply "post and ghost"; building traction requires ongoing commenting and genuine engagement, which is unsustainable if you spread yourself across eight different apps. Third, an email list paired with a compelling lead magnet. Whether it’s an exclusive unreleased song, a video breakdown, or behind-the-scenes content, you need an incentive that attracts your ideal listener so you can follow up with them directly over time. The next step is cultivating industry relationships across eight core categories: Venue owners Open mic hosts Other artists and bands Band leaders Producers Composers Audio engineers (tracking, editing, mixing, mastering, and other) Music educators I have built personal, working relationships across every single one of these categories throughout my career. The key is approaching these contacts with zero expectations: never lead with demands for gigs or shortcuts. Focus on adding value, collaborating, sharing resources, and growing alongside them. When it comes to securing funding, early on you will need to make do with the gear and resources you already have before expecting outside backing. When you are ready to assemble a sponsorship or investment offer, follow two fundamental principles: First, build a three-tier offer structure. When presented with traditional Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers, most clients avoid the bottom option and naturally gravitate toward the middle or top. If you want all three tiers to convert at a higher price point, eliminate "Bronze" entirely and frame your tiers as Gold, Diamond, and Platinum. Second, focus entirely on what the sponsor gets out of the arrangement. Never frame your proposal around how much money you need for your album or tour. Every line item should detail clear commercial deliverables: placing their logo on your site, featuring their brand in your YouTube videos, publishing dedicated social posts, and highlighting them to your email subscribers. When I used this exact package structure for Clean Slate Victoria, I pitched three prospective sponsors and signed two – a 66% conversion rate. Finally, dive deep into the fundamentals outlined in The Renegade Musician. Success doesn't come from skimming dozens of generic music business books; it comes from implementing core promotional systems until they generate real-world results. Website Refinement & Groove Gainer Spotify Promotion

After setting up an account with Groove Gainer’s Stage and a new artist website to act as a repository for his smart links, David moves on to the next step in the process – promotion. In this episode of The David Andrew Wiebe Show, David illuminates the thinking behind his latest website refinements, as well as how to use content and paid promotion strategically to grow your career. Most importantly, he purchases Spotify promotion from Groove Gainer. In This Episode: The changes David made to his music website and why The power of banners and hero carousels How too many video embeds can negatively affect load times The importance of leading people where you want them to go on your website How David’s using his About page to build an electronic press kit How David is thinking about improving his Music page The power of music bundles How Stage’s AI assistant, HANI, guides you on your music promo journey A powerful marketing concept you should tattoo on your soul Key Resources: Stage: Enter code DAWCAST at checkout for a free month of Pro Transcription: I’m back with the next phase of music promotion using my new website and Stage. This is part of a deliberate, planned-out series connecting the new artist business model, owned website infrastructure, and conversion tools. In the previous video, we built the foundation of an artist website. Promoting exclusively on social media doesn't work long-term; you need a central tentpole under which all your work resides. Having an owned platform allows you to deploy tools like smart links strategically as you drive traffic. Since the initial build, I refined the design. The AI wireframe relied far too heavily on dividers and repetitive text that didn't reflect the visual hierarchy seen on sites like Michael Bublé's. At the top of the homepage, I implemented a hero carousel. Carousels are ideal for keeping a site visually dynamic without requiring a complete redesign for every single release. The first banner links directly to a Stage smart link for my single “Hope,” allowing listeners to stream the track on Spotify, Apple Music, or Deezer while offering an email capture field. Below the hero area, the music section highlights my three most recent releases, each routed through a dedicated smart link, with an option to explore the full catalog. Next is a video showcase featuring four live performance clips powered by Divi's video carousel module, directing viewers straight to my YouTube channel without bloating page load speeds. I also built out the About page into an interactive press kit, complete with a detailed bio, high-resolution downloadable imagery, and third-party testimonials. The Music page is populated with smart links for releases like the Makeshift Romance EP and “City Lights.” Moving forward, this page will include direct-to-consumer purchase buttons, physical bundles, and lyric sheets so fans have options beyond passive streaming. Now let’s look at Stage. Stage's AI assistant, HANI, sits in the right-hand panel, prompting you on completed tasks and recommending next steps like pitching music blogs or scheduling promotional posts. The dashboard tracks total smart-link visits and listener conversion signals. This brings us to an essential marketing concept every musician must understand: If you have time but no money, create content. If you have money but no time, spend on advertising. In an ideal world, do both. Right now, I have more money than time, so I am investing directly into a paid campaign on screen. Stage offers three promotional tiers: Essential for $39.99 (A Strong Start), Pro (Growth-Focused) for $69.99, and Elite (Maximum Impact) for $99.99. I selected the Pro option through Groove Gainer to launch a targeted Spotify playlist promotion campaign. We will track the incoming data, listener retention, and conversions as the campaign runs. First Impressions: tracklog

Are you an artist, producer, or composer with a huge catalog? Are you trying to manage your dozens or even hundreds of releases with an Excel spreadsheet? Wouldn’t you love a better tool to monitor your music's status? In this episode of The David Andrew Wiebe Show, David explores tracklog, a Windows app designed to help you oversee your releases, whether they’re live, distributed, or pitched. In This Episode: A better way to manage your music catalog Downloading and installing tracklog Setting up and importing a catalog spreadsheet Managing your music inside tracklog How to get 15% off your first year Key Resources: tracklog: Enter code DAWCAST at checkout for 15% off your first year Transcription: Today we're looking at tracklog. Just like with Stage, I am exploring tracklog for the first time with only minimal preparation, so you are coming along for the ride. To start, I downloaded the Windows desktop application and launched the installer. tracklog is designed to help musicians, composers, and labels keep track of their song catalogs across multiple platforms. If you have music out in various places – as a writer, producer, or stock composer – this gives you a central place to compile and monitor every release. To get started, you prepare a spreadsheet. I put together a clean file with about ten tracks from my first album, including columns for BPM, ISRC codes, platforms like DistroKid, CD Baby, Bandcamp, SOCAN, and YouTube. Importing the spreadsheet into tracklog was remarkably fast. The import wizard maps your spreadsheet directly into the app: each row becomes a track, the title column names the song, and platform columns convert into tracklog platform channels. Your status marks become color-coded dots showing whether a track is live or pending. The genre column converts into individual searchable tags on each track card. If the app isn't sure about a specific column, it highlights it in yellow, lets you review its recommendation, and imports everything smoothly once resolved. Inside the catalog view, your music is organized into lists. One row represents a track, and each dot represents its status on a given platform. Clicking a dot toggles between "live" and "to upload," while a right-click lets you set other statuses like review or reject. Clicking a track title opens its dedicated card. Here you can store and view everything related to that specific song: statuses, release dates, metadata, files, ISRC codes, BPM, sub-genres, character, instruments, vocal types, energy levels, descriptions, alternative versions, and notes. You can customize which columns show on your main catalog grid, adjust zoom settings, and view release timeline insights that compare your output and coverage across years and months. The settings panel also lets you add legal and publishing details, including your artist name, legal name, PRO affiliations, and writer or publisher IPI numbers. Overall, tracklog is a much better solution than managing a traditional spreadsheet. While entering data still requires work, it makes visualizing your catalog, managing upload statuses, and tracking release history far cleaner. If you want to check out tracklog, use the discount code DAWCAST to save 15% on your first year. Subscribe to The David Andrew Wiebe Show Thanks for listening.
