Mary Wanja: A Sick Child, A Mother's Tale, A Grim Discovery
On June 4, 2004, in Ragati Village in Nyeri District, a young mother named Jane Muriruki was the last person seen carrying her sick one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Mary Wanja. She told neighbors she was taking the child to the hospital — but later returned alone, offering conflicting explanations about where the child had gone.
The next day, the child's body was discovered floating in a cattle dip. A postmortem revealed the cause of death was strangulation, not drowning, suggesting the little girl had been killed before her body was discarded. Suspicion quickly turned to the mother, who had been the last known person with the child alive.

Timothy Mwaniki: A Life Ended, A Broken System, A Truth Missing
A Kshs 20 dispute at a small hotel turns deadly. After a brief confrontation over unpaid meat, Timothy leaves Bam Bam Hotel only to be found later with a fatal stab wound to the chest. Police arrest Charles, the meat vendor, but no one ever sees the stabbing, forensic evidence is mishandled, and key witnesses refuse to testify. In court, the prosecution relies on weak circumstantial evidence that fails to meet the standard of proof. In December 2023, Charles is acquitted. This episode examines how investigative failures, missing forensic links, and reasonable doubt shaped a murder case—and leaves the unsettling question: if not Charles, then who killed Timothy?

Florence Odhiambo: A Mother's Cry, a Son's Testimony, a Father's Defence
Florence Odhiambo Okinyo was the deceased in Republic v John Okinyo Otieno, a murder case arising from events of July 2022 in Siaya County, Kenya. The post-mortem examination established death due to blunt force trauma. The accused, her husband, was charged with murder under sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code. In 2025, the High Court of Kenya held that the prosecution had proved the unlawful act, causation, and malice aforethought beyond reasonable doubt, and entered a conviction for murder. The case is cited in legal discussions on circumstantial evidence, domestic homicide, and the doctrine of "last seen with the deceased."

James Koech: Family Ties, Cheap Thrills, Murder
In March 2015, what began as a night of cheap thrills in Simboyon Village ended in tragedy. Jackson Kimeli Koech had been drinking busaa and chang'aa with friends when a petty argument broke out — just ten shillings was enough to spark it. But in the haze of alcohol and tempers, the disagreement turned violent. Witnesses say Jackson stomped on James Kipkemei Koech's abdomen, leaving him badly injured.
James clung to life for ten days before dying in hospital. The post-mortem revealed the truth: blunt force trauma had ruptured his organs, leading to a slow, painful death. While the family mourned, Jackson vanished. For three years, he hid in Mau Narok until police finally tracked him down in 2018.
Brought to trial, Jackson faced a murder charge. His defense? That everyone was drunk, and maybe James had fallen on a stump or stone. But the court was not convinced. The judge ruled that Jackson's assault had directly caused James's death. Still, because the state could not prove malice aforethought, the charge was reduced. In 2021, Jackson was convicted of manslaughter — a lesser sentence, but one that left a family without answers and a village forever scarred.
