[…] The rivers and streams in our area, particularly the rivers, have become disconnected from the floodplains that were our natural landscape here in Northern California. And as a result, the rivers have become like food deserts for fish. They're too cold, too clean, too fast moving. But by flooding our fields during the winter, we're able to produce zooplankton. Because the combination of the sun and the water and the rice straw that we don't burn and the soil combine to create zooplankton or bugs or fish food that we're then able to return to rivers and streams where fish, when they have access to that food resource, grow up to five times bigger, stronger, faster than fish that don't have access to zooplankton. because we've disconnected the rivers from the floodplains.
