[…] Are you guys ready to join us on our voyage? Yes, we are. But first, can you tell our Culture Kids a bit about yourself and the Polynesian Voyaging Society? What is it and why does it exist? Happy to. I'm from the valley of Nu'uanu on the island of Oahu, and I've been sailing with the Polynesian Voyaging Society for 20 years. Back in 1973, three people came together with a big idea. Herb Kawainui Kane, a native Hawaiian artist, Ben Finney, a scientist at the Bishop Museum, and Tommy Holmes, a waterman, came together and they started the Polynesian Voyaging Society. What they wanted to prove was that ancient Polynesians didn't just drift across the Pacific Ocean by accident on rafts, but they navigated on purpose with real skills and had the goal to settle the islands scattered across the entire ocean.
