[…] Frankie Knuckles is considered the godfather of Chicago house. He was instrumental in developing this new sound in the late 1970s at the warehouse club, but the culture existed before the music was ever called house. At the time, it was just called dance music. And unlike disco, it wasn't played on the radio. So the main place you could hear it was during DJ sets at the warehouse, which some people would call the house. See where I'm going here? The DJs who did record their sets sold them at record shops, even after the warehouse had closed. Record shops like Imports Etc. in Chicago, where a young DJ named Chip Eberhardt worked. […]
