Ethiopia's Grand Dam: Power, Pride, and the Nile's Contested Future

Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), highlighting its inauguration as Africa's largest hydroelectric project. Both sources emphasise the dam's monumental scale and engineering complexity, detailing its dimensions, construction materials, and power generation capacity. The BBC article focuses on the national pride and unity the project fostered within Ethiopia, despite diplomatic tensions with downstream countries like Egypt, and shares the personal experiences of an engineer and a nurse who contributed to its development. Conversely, the Webuild Group press release, as the dam's constructor, concentrates on the technical achievements, its role in Ethiopia's green energy transition, and the positive social and economic impacts created around the construction site. Both sources acknowledge the GERD's potential to significantly increase electricity access across Ethiopia, though the BBC piece also notes the substantial infrastructure work still required for widespread distribution.

Ethiopia's Railway: How a Billion-Dollar Railway is Redefining Global Trade and Overcoming Landlocked Challenges

The ongoing discussions between China and Ethiopia regarding an upgrade to the Ethiopian-Djibouti Railway. Ethiopia's Minister for Finance, Ahmed Shide, revealed these talks, with the Ethiopian government actively seeking Chinese funding for the project, which aims to enhance the railway with new infrastructure like bridges and stations. Despite the railway being a major, multi-billion dollar project largely financed and constructed by China, it has faced profitability issues and required government subsidies to cover operational costs. The upgrade seeks to transform the line into a profitable entity, essential for Ethiopia's foreign trade via Djibouti.

Dangerous sea journey for a better life!

   • A deadly shipwreck occurred off the coast of Yemen, involving a boat carrying migrants, mostly Ethiopians.• Initial reports indicated at least 68 deaths and 74 missing, while later figures from Yemeni security officials stated 76 bodies had been recovered and 32 people rescued. The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 154 or 157 people were on board.• The incident happened off Yemen’s Abyan province, a frequent destination for boats smuggling African migrants.• The waterways between Yemen and the Horn of Africa are a common but perilous route for migrants seeking to reach wealthier Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for work. This route is described as one of the "busiest and most perilous" in the world.• Migrants are often transported by smugglers on dangerous, overcrowded boats across the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden. Smugglers have become more reckless, knowingly sending boats into dangerous conditions to avoid patrols.• The journey is fraught with risks, with hundreds dying or going missing in shipwrecks off Yemen in recent months and years. For example, the IOM recorded 558 deaths on the Red Sea route last year, with 462 from boat accidents.• Despite Yemen's ongoing civil war since 2014, it remains a key transit point for irregular migration, particularly from Ethiopia, which faces high youth unemployment (over 20%).• Those who make the crossing often face additional threats in Yemen, including abuse and exploitation, and tens of thousands have become stranded there. Some deported migrants attempt the crossing again.• Ethiopian officials have urged citizens to use legal avenues for migration and avoid traffickers.• Rescue operations were launched by Yemeni health authorities and security forces to find the missing and recover bodies, with conditions described as difficult. Many bodies were found scattered across a wide area of the shore

Ethiopia Rejects Trump's Nile Dam Funding Claims

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd), a massive hydroelectric project on the River Nile, which has recently been completed and is a source of national pride for Ethiopia. It highlights the controversy surrounding its funding, as a senior Ethiopian official has denied claims by Donald Trump that the United States largely financed its construction, asserting it was built solely with Ethiopian government and public contributions. The dam has strained relations with downstream nations like Egypt and Sudan, who fear it will significantly reduce their water supply, a concern echoed in Trump's comments. The article also touches upon the domestic fundraising efforts within Ethiopia to finance the project and the importance of the dam for providing electricity to the majority of its population. 1. Ethiopian Education System: Challenges and Enhancement Pathways

The sources highlight several significant challenges facing the Ethiopian education system: Alarmingly Low University Entrance Exam Pass Rates: A major challenge is the extremely low success rate of high school students taking the university entrance exam. In one instance, only 3% of the 845,188 students who took the exam obtained the average required for university admission, meaning only 27,000 students passed. This pass rate was a slight drop of 0.01 percentage points compared to the previous school year. Another report indicates a pass rate of 3.3% for 29,909 out of 896,520 grade 12 students in a different exam period. The Minister of Education, Berhanu Nega, explicitly stated that these results demonstrate "how our education system and we as a society have failed". Systemic Failure in Schools: The poor performance is widespread, with nearly half of the schools that presented candidates for the university entrance exam having not a single student pass. Inadequate Teaching Resources and Methods: Dr. Meseret Assefa, a lecturer at Addis Ababa University, attributes the low scores to a "lack of teaching tools and poor learning and teaching methods". He also points out a "lack of interest in tackling the real teaching and learning problems that affect student performance". Cheating in Examinations: The education system has faced issues with cheating. Efforts to reduce cheating in examinations have been welcomed, and the Ministry of Education was previously compelled to administer national exams outside students' localities due to the "spread of stealing of exams". Poor Quality of Learning and Low Foundational Literacy: Despite "enormous progress towards universal primary education," with 88.7% of children enrolled by 2021-2022, the quality of learning remains a major challenge. A critical issue is that 90% of 10-year-olds are unable to read or understand a sentence from a simple text. Low Enrolment in Higher Education Levels: While primary school enrolment is high, only 33.1% of the age group is enrolled in secondary education, according to UNICEF. Furthermore, in 2018, only 10% of the age group was in higher education in Ethiopia, as reported by the World Bank. Challenges and Aspirations of Youth: The education system is discussed in relation to the views and attitudes of Ethiopian youth, including their aspirations, challenges, and expectations concerning the current educational offerings. The national exam results play a significant role in shaping the future of Ethiopian youth and the nation's educational standards.
