Over Biotechnologie
<p>Terwijl de thermometer bij Ferdinand Griesdoorn in Spanje 40 graden aangeeft, zit Charlotte van der Laag in een veel koeler Amsterdam. Ditmaal spreken ze over biotechnologie.</p><p>In 1919, toen de term biotechnologie voor het eerst werd gebruikt, verstond men onder biotechnologie het produceren van (nieuwe) materialen door gebruik te maken van levende organismen. Sindsdien is biotechnologie ontwikkeld tot een enorm breed veld, vol met innovatie en onverwachte toepassingen. De vier te onderscheiden gebieden zijn bio-computing, bio-molecules, bio-systemen en bio-machine interfaces.<br></p><p>De technologie wordt gebruikt om eigendom te claimen over natuurlijke producten. Er wordt ook medicatie mee ontwikkeld, net als consumentenproducten. Waar ligt de prioriteit bij de ontwikkeling van deze technologie? Schijnbaar meer bij de commercie dan bij (bijvoorbeeld) volksgezondheid. Wat zijn de ethische implicaties?
