Instrucciones para aprender a navegar y a orientarse en alta mar, para cruzar “el charco” y visitar Montevideo y Colonia del Sacramento, en Uruguay, antiguo enclave portugués célebre por su monopolio en el tráfico de esclavos. Recuerdo la historia de mi abuelo, que pasó casi mitad de su vida embarcado en los buques de guerra de la Marina italiana, sus años vividos como prisionero de guerra en los campos de concentración en Alemania, durante la Segunda guerra mundial, y sus consejos para nunca perder el rumbo. Mi viaje al “nuevo mundo” acaba de terminar. Es la hora de volver a casa.

De éxodos - E9 . Expreso de medianoche
Continuo mi viaje a través de la “Gran Manzana” en busca de algunas historias y memorias de los emigrados italianos y “latinos” en la ciudad. Camino por Time Square, Chelsea, Central Park y llego a Harlem, donde imagino volver al barrio de los años 70 para aprender la historia de la salsa y de sus antiguos protagonistas procedentes de Centroamérica y el Caribe. Tomo una habitación en un gran resort “todo incluido” para conocer como funcionan estas -Alcatraz- posmodernas y tratar dibujar con cierta precisión la diferencia entre el viajero y el turista.

Visito la comunidad de inmigrados italianos residentes en el Bronx, para aprender de sus historias y de sus memorias. Conozco a personas estupendas que de día hacen todo tipo de trabajo y que de noche se convierten en cantantes e interpretes de la tradición melódica italiana en algunos bares, restaurantes y cafés de Nueva York.
