How is the First World War remembered in the Czech Republic? And how does the country’s unique historical position influence the way Armistice Day is commemorated?These are just some of the questions students from Atheneum Lier, campus Arthur Vanderpoorten, brought with them to the Czech Republic as part of their international Erasmus+ research project, “Building Peace by Watching History Through Several Eyes.”Eva Catteeuw and her students are visiting colleagues in Moravia, the Czech Republic, to explore how the memory of war shapes a country. But first, they make a stop in Vienna to see a very special uniform.Through this project, young people are literally and figuratively building a future of peace and mutual understanding by looking back together at a past that affects us all. At a time when peace no longer seems self-evident, this project takes on even greater significance. With the support of the EU’s Erasmus+ programme.

Weten Duitse jongeren waarom 11 november een feestdag is in België? Leren ze op school over de Duitse inval in ons land in 1914? Dit zijn slechts enkele van de vragen waarmee leerlingen van Atheneneum Lier campus Arthur Vanderpoorten naar Duitsland trokken, als volgende halte in hun internationale Erasmus+-onderzoeksproject “Building peace by watching history through several eyes.” Eva Catteeuw en haar leerlingen van het Atheneum van Lier gaan naar collega's in het Noorden van Duitsland en onderzoeken wat de herinnering aan de oorlog met een land doet. Ze komen tot verrassende vaststellingen. Met dit project bouwen jongeren letterlijk en figuurlijk aan een toekomst van vrede en wederzijds begrip, door samen terug te blikken op een verleden dat ons allemaal raakt. In een tijd waarin vrede niet langer vanzelfsprekend lijkt, krijgt dit project extra betekenis. Met de steun van het Erasmus+ programma van de EU.
