About Dead Drop Archives

Dead Drop Archives is a forensic documentary series. Each file reconstructs a single unresolved case from the primary record — archival documents, investigative records, and declassified material — and only the primary record. Every claim is held to two independent sources. Where the record disagrees with itself, the disagreement is left standing. We do not solve these cases. We reconstruct them. New case files open regularly. The archive is open. deaddroparchives.com

Episode 3: The Isdal Woman: Case 134/70

In November 1970, a woman was found burning in a remote Norwegian valley. She had eight fake identities. Every label had been cut from her clothing. Every bottle near her body had its label scraped off. Soot was found in her lungs — meaning she was alive when the fire started. Bergen police ruled it a suicide. She was never identified. This is Case 134/70. Episode 6: Operation RUBICON: The Company That Spied on the World

For over fifty years, the CIA and West German intelligence secretly owned the world's most trusted encryption company. More than 120 governments bought its machines believing they were buying neutral Swiss security. Every message was readable — to the people who built the back door. This is the case file — a primary-source reconstruction: the purchase, the codenames, the intercepts that shaped the Iranian hostage crisis, the Falklands War, and the 1986 Berlin bombing response, and the investigation that finally forced it into the open in 2020. Episode 4: Chernobyl: The Forty-Second Flaw

On April 26th, 1986, at 1:23 in the morning, an operator at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant pressed the emergency shutdown button. It is designed to stop the reactor. The reactor exploded forty seconds later. The Soviet investigation blamed the operators. The IAEA's revised report, published five years later, did not. This is the case file — a primary source reconstruction of what the documents actually show: the design flaw, the prior knowledge, and the five-point revision that changed the official account. Episode 2: Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Case File

On January 27th, 1959, nine certified Soviet mountaineers set up camp on a slope in the northern Urals. That night, they cut through their tent from the inside, walked out into minus-thirty-degree cold in their socks, and never came back. The Soviet investigation closed four months later. Cause of death: an unknown compelling force. This is the case file. Episode 5: Apollo 11: The Missing Tapes

On July 20th, 1969, 600 million people watched Neil Armstrong step onto the Moon. What they watched was a degraded copy. The original recording — captured on slow-scan television at three ground stations simultaneously — was higher resolution, higher frame rate, and significantly sharper than anything broadcast that night. It was deposited at the National Archives in 1970. Returned to NASA in 1984. Then erased and reused to save money on magnetic tape. A GSFC-led internal search, running from 2006 to 2009, reviewed over 200,000 tapes. The originals were not found. This is the case file. Episode 1: A 600-Year-Old Manuscript That No One Can Read

In 1912, a rare book dealer named Wilfrid Voynich purchased a small manuscript from a Jesuit college near Rome. It was written in a script no one has ever read — not then, and not now. The manuscript is 600 years old. It has been studied by professional cryptographers, computational linguists, medieval historians, and NSA analysts. No one has decoded it. This is the case file.
