The Bondage We Defend

Jesus offered His hearers freedom, but they immediately resisted: “We have never been in bondage to anyone.” Their denial became a barrier to the very freedom Christ was offering.

Bondage is not always visible. A person may appear free outwardly while anger, bitterness, fear, pride, lust, greed, or the need for approval exercises mastery within. We may insist that we are choosing freely, while our choices are increasingly being governed by desires and patterns that have overcome us.

The longer bondage remains, the more familiar it becomes. We rename anger as strength, fear as caution, pride as confidence, unforgiveness as protecting our peace, and rebellion as independence. We defend what God is exposing and call it part of who we are.

In this devotion, we are challenged to stop covering, excusing, and protecting what Christ has come to break. Truth exposes the chain, not to humiliate us, but to lead us towards confession, mercy, and freedom.

We cannot be freed from what we continue to excuse. The chain that truth reveals is the chain Christ intends to break.

Hebrews 6:13-20 The Hope That Holds

What keeps a believer steady when the promise seems delayed, the pressure increases, and the temptation to give up becomes real?

Hebrews 6 points us to Abraham, who inherited the promise through faith and patient endurance. But our assurance rests on something even greater than Abraham’s example. It rests on the unchanging character of God. He made the promise, confirmed it with an oath, and it is impossible for Him to lie.

The hope set before us is not wishful thinking or a passing emotion. It is securely anchored in Jesus Christ, our forerunner, who has already entered the presence of God on our behalf.

The storm may rock your life, but it cannot carry you away when your hope is anchored in Christ. Do not let go. God’s promise is certain, Jesus has gone before you, and the hope you have in Him will hold.

The Word That Corrects You Frees You

We often ask God to free us from anger, anxiety, bitterness, temptation, broken relationships, and destructive patterns, while resisting what His Word says about those very areas.

God’s Word does not merely inform us. It examines the thoughts and intentions of the heart, exposes what is operating beneath our behaviour, and names what we may have excused, defended, or misrepresented. Like a mirror, it shows us what needs attention. But the mirror cannot help us if we see the truth and walk away unchanged.

In this devotion, we discover why James calls God’s Word the “perfect law of liberty.” The same Word that confronts our pride leads us towards humility. The Word that exposes bitterness leads us towards forgiveness. The Word that challenges lust, dishonesty, selfishness, and fear leads us towards purity, integrity, love, and trust.

Correction is not rejection. The Word that corrects us is the Word God uses to free us. But freedom can only come where we stop defending ourselves and surrender every protected area of life to the authority of Christ.
