Management in the movies: lessons from The Big Short (2015)

This episode is also on video! Follow us on YouTube.

This summer at McGill Delve, we’re going to the movies! Management experts from McGill University will join me to analyze popular films and share the lessons that lie within them. On the marquee today: The Big Short (2015).

The film depicts the lead-up to the financial crisis of 2008. It follows three protagonists as they bet against the housing market to make a profit. How did they see the collapse coming, while others did not? Could the collapse have been avoided with different incentive structures? And in a story about profit and risky investments, are there any true heroes?

Joining us to discuss the film is Levi Olando, a former fraud investigator and a current PhD student at McGill University. Eric Dicaire, Delve's managing editor, hosts this episode.

What did you think of this episode? Let us know! Agentic engineering solves the vibe coding problem in workplaces

Vibe coding, the process of using AI models to write code for you, first emerged in 2025. It has since sparked fierce discussion about the future of software development. Are software engineers now redundant? Can CEOs now vibe code their way to new markets, without an official product development team? Will the next big app come from someone who has never written their own line of code?

Lakshya Agarwal is a forward-deployment engineer at an AI company called Tavily. He’s also an experienced vibe coder. He believes in the power of vibe coding, but not without vigorous human oversight and accountability. That’s why he advocates for agentic engineering, the practice of safely using vibe coding in development pipelines. In today’s interview, he tells us what that could look like in your organization.

Eric Dicaire, Delve’s managing editor, hosts this episode.

More info about Lakshya.

// MORE FROM DELVE

When gamers become part of the AI supply chain

Another workday in the metaverse

The ways your data is lying to you

// STAY IN TOUCH

LinkedIn (https://bit.ly/3TiUFVw)

Instagram (https://bit.ly/3ZXbxVz)

Facebook (https://bit.ly/3ZrNsWR)

Email (delve@mcgill.ca)

Website (delve.mcgill.ca)

// CREDITS

Delve is the official thought leadership publication of the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. Cutting middle managers won't improve patient care

Read this episode’s companion article at delve.mcgill.ca!

Behind every successful hospital visit is a network of middle managers who made it possible. But their responsibilities often overlap with others in the organization, which makes them prime targets for cuts during times of austerity.

But for Prof. Giovanni Radelli and Andrea D’addario, job overlap can be a feature rather than a bug. This is what we saw in a recent study by Radaelli and his co-authors, which documents the experiences of quality managers across 12 Italian hospitals.

What do we lose when we reduce middle management? What function do they serve in the delivery of care? How does job overlap actually help them better contribute to the organization?

In this episode of the McGill Delve podcast, we explore all of these questions and more.

Eric Dicaire, Delve’s managing editor, hosts this episode.

Professor Giovanni Radaelli is an Assistant Professor (Reader) at the Warwick School of Business.
