About Demystifying Research: Dialogue on training, careers, and all things research

What is Demystifying Research? Hosted by Kelly Harris PhD CCC-SLP and Catherine Hoyt, PhD OTD OTR/L, ‘Demystifying Research’ is a space where we ‘dialogue on training, careers, and all things research.’ Everything from “is research right for me’ to ‘how to apply,’ ‘mentorship,’ ‘which research degree is right for me,’ and ‘managing failure.’ This is a space where we engage in discussions around the questions we all have or have had when considering a career in research and science. As clinician scientists we seek to answer questions and address issues that aren’t clearly addressed in more formal spaces, things that weren’t addressed in our clinical training, questions that we may not know how or where to begin to seek answers. This is not a space only for scientists and researchers, but for anyone who may be interested in science and research. We are so glad you have joined us.

[…] And so I look at the sort of my framework for thinking about this. And I think a lot of the barriers that we see come up and probably have been, you know, you all have covered this. I think a lot is sort of some of those personal barriers of things like time management, you know, a lot of people may have kids may be partnered during grad school, and how do you weigh, you know, your personal life with your professional life. And, you know, and the way in the passion and what you want to do with the realities of what can be done during the time that you have, I think is another one. So I started, I lumped all of those under the P, P, the person factors, and then I think what I've gotten into with a little bit of research has been sort of more of the environmental or things that we can think of that are a little bit more systemic in nature.
