   [Growing Giants] Lt. Patrick Gomez, DDS, Career as a Navy Dentist

   LT Patrick Bryce Ambida Gomez grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno and earned his Bachelors of Science in Biology. He was commissioned as Ensign in 2019 in the Navy Reserves via the Health Professions Scholarship Program and commissioned as Lieutenant upon earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2022. After Officer Development School in Newport, RI, LT Gomez reported to Naval Medicine and Readiness and Training Unit Norfolk, Norfolk, V A, where he completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency from September 2022 to August 2023. He was then assigned to the USS Ronald Reagan from August 2023 to August 2025 where he served as Principal assistant and Division Officer of the Dental Department which was able to achieve a 99% operational dental readiness. LT Gomez also served as the Vice President of the Wardroom, leading 150 officers and coordinating 8 events and raising $5,000 for the Wardroom Association. In August 2025, he reported to Navy Medicine and Readiness Training Command Yokosuka, where he serves as Dental Officer at the Fleet Dental Clinic. LT Gomez holds dental licensure with the Nevada State Boards of Dental Examiners and is an active member in the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry. His military decorations include: Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer, National Defense Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Sea Service Ribbon, and Pistol Marksman Ribbon.    Dr. Paul Subar, DDS, D.Ed, Professor, Special Care & Hospital Dentistry at the Dugoni School

   Dr. Paul Subar passionately recounts his journey through life and dentistry, starting from his childhood filled with music to becoming a highly accomplished dentist. Despite an early passion for music influenced by his family, an unexpected encounter with a dentist while surfing steered him towards dentistry. He shares anecdotes about his experiences in dental school at UCLA, his involvement in dental research, and his subsequent roles in hospital dentistry and public health service. Key themes include the importance of seizing unexpected opportunities, balancing professional aspirations with personal interests like music, and caring for patients with special needs. Dr. Subar emphasizes the value of mentorship, continuous learning, and treating colleagues with respect in his reflections on a fulfilling career. ---- Professor at the Dugoni School and the director of the school's Special Care Clinic/Hospital Dentistry Program, Subar teaches three core courses in the curriculum and a variety of weekly seminar programs. He specializes in access to oral health for patients with special needs, including those with severe medical, developmental and/or psychosocial conditions. Subar's clinical responsibilities include delivery of dental services to patients requiring hospital dentistry as well as responding to consultation requests from the transplant and medicine services at California Pacific Medical Center. He has served on several key school committees including the Admissions committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Faculty Appointments and Tenure Committee, and is the chair of the Extramural Programs Committee. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz with baccalaureate degrees in both biochemistry and molecular biology, Subar earned his DDS from the University of California Los Angeles and completed his hospital training at the UCLA Medical Center. In 2009 he received his Doctorate in Education and Professional Leadership from University of the Pacific's Benerd School of Education. Subar's background includes serving as a dental director of a Federally Qualified Health Center and as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service. Subar received the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Faculty Award three years in a row and was the first award recipient of the California Dental Association's annual Arthur A.    [Hospital Dentistry] Dr. Gary Roberts, Hospital Dentist & Practice Owner

   Dr. Gary Roberts has performed hospital dentistry and surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital since 1995. He is also on the faculty at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He treats a variety of oral and maxillofacial conditions, and all aspects of general dentistry, specially dental trauma and infection, dental implant and restorative reconstruction, conventional and surgical endodontic procedures, dental oncology care of cancer patients, as well as orofacial pain treatment. He has presented CME lectures and Grand Rounds to numerous Departments at Stanford, as well as teaching Residents and Fellows at Stanford Medical School and the Palo Alto VA. During his nearly a quarter of a century of military service, he was one of the leading researchers on combat trauma and the pathophysiology of projectile wounds. She is committed to improving the oral health and quality of life of her patients, especially those who face challenges accessing dental services outside of a hospital setting. Dr. Franco Hernandez was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside where he obtained a Bachelor’s in Economics, graduating with honors. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Southern California where he spent dedicated time as a selective student with emphasized training in the areas of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental Anesthesia, and Public Health. Following graduation, he began his post-graduate training as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery non-categorical resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital / UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, one of the largest level 1 trauma centers in the state of Texas. He continued his training at Stanford University Medical Center where he completed a Dental Medicine, Oral & Maxillofacial clinical instructorship. Dr. Hernandez is currently working part time private practice and part time as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University Hospital. He diagnoses, treats, and manages a variety of conditions including: odontogenic infection, dentoalveolar trauma, edentulism, non-malignant oral lesions, benign cysts/tumor of the maxilla/mandible, osteonecrosis of the maxilla/mandible, TMJ disorders, and orofacial pain. He routinely performs surgical dental extractions, oral reconstruction with endosseous dental implants, removal of 3rd molars, bone grafting, excision of benign maxillary/mandibular cysts, as well as management of TMJ disorders and Orofacial pain. As a Dental Oncologist, he specializes in dental procedures and surgeries prior to, during, and following head & neck radiation therapy and chemotherapy.    [Hospital Dentistry] Dr. Dyani Gaudilliere, Chief of Dentistry at Stanford University School of Medicine

   Dr. Dyani Gaudilliere specializes in Dental Surgery and Oral Oncology in a hospital setting. As a hospital dentist she performs surgical treatment of infection and trauma to the teeth and supporting alveolar bone. She also performs medically necessary dental clearance and extractions in the context of larger medical conditions, such as cardiac disease, joint replacement, or organ transplantation. As an oral oncologist, she specializes in surgical dental treatment prior to, during, and following radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Dr. Gaudilliere holds the position of Chief of Dentistry at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where she also serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery. She completed her dental education at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2009, a general practice residency at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine in 2010 and a master’s degree in public health at the University of California Berkeley in 2012. Dr. Gaudilliere has numerous publications encompassing respected journals such as Science Immunology, the Journal of Dental Research, Implant Dentistry, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Frontiers in Immunology, and Brain. She has also co-edited a textbook titled "Early Detection and Treatment of Head & Neck Cancers: Theoretical Background and Newly Emerging Research," published in 2021.    Dr. Nader Nadershahi is dean of his alma mater at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. After graduating dental school in 94’ he has held several faculty positions in all areas of the curriculum, leadership roles as a Group Practice Administrator, Department Char, Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Before becoming Dean, he has owned and operated his own private general dentistry practice in San Rafael and San Anselmo, CA with his wife Dr. Niloufar Nadershahi, who is also a Pacific Alumna. Dr. Nadershahi holds a doctorate degree in education from Pacific's Benerd School of Education and has an MBA from Pacific's Eberhardt School of Business. He is a fellow of the International and American College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Nadershahi was recently elected as chair-elect of the board in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Dr. Nadershahi is honored to count Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni as a mentor and friend and is determined to continue growing the humanistic model of education that he experienced as a student, by focusing on mutual respect, high standards, dignity and self-worth.    Dr. Jack Dillenberg is Dean Emeritus of A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH) after serving fifteen years as the Inaugural Dean. After dental school he served as a Dentist in the US Navy then practiced at a residential facility for people with severe disabilities before moving to Jamaica to work in a very rural clinic for their Ministry of Health. Prior to joining ASDOH, Dr. Dillenberg was Associate Director for public health programs in the California Department of Health Services and served as an Area Health Officer for Los Angeles County. During most of the 1990s, Dr. Dillenberg served in several capacities in the Arizona Department of Health Services, including four years as its Director. Dr. Dillenberg is the recipient of a great number of honors and awards, including the Arizona Medical Association Humanitarian of the Year, the Fresh Start Foundation Man of the Year, the Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Award of Merit and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry. Most recently, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry 2019 Distinguished Service Award. He currently serves as the Global Ambassador for the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry. He was recently elected Mayor of Jerome, AZ. And selected as a Public Member of the Arizona State Supreme Court Attorney Discipline Probable Cause Committee.
