Episode 62: The 5 elephants in the room for dental practices in 2027, with Savanah Carlson of MaxAssist
In this episode of the Dentistry Speaks podcast, brought to you by the Speaking Consulting Network, host Kevin Henry talks with Savanah Carlson, director of partnerships at MaxAssist, about the five "elephants in the room" she hears from practices, consultants and coaches as the industry looks ahead to 2027.
A former office manager and operations leader, Carlson walks through the problems she sees most often:
Busy isn't productive. She estimates that one extra hygiene visit scheduled each day is worth about $1,000 a week, or roughly $50,000 a year, and nearly $500,000 for a 10-location group.
Decision fatigue. Teams are handed a thousand decisions a day when they need a clear workflow.
Inconsistency. In a hiring crisis, practices can't build a strong team on individual heroics.
Lack of visibility. Leaders ask for results they can't see, such as overdue patients and unscheduled treatment.
More technology isn't automatically the answer. Tools need to simplify the work and be intuitive enough for teams to adopt.
Carlson and Henry also discuss how to choose AI and technology based on the problems specific to your practice, and why protecting the human side of dentistry matters, since "patients remember how we made them feel." She closes with her pitch for MaxAssist, which she says goes beyond standard patient engagement by giving teams a daily workflow of who to contact and which treatment to book.

Episode 61: The Dentrix Queen's top 3 PMS features to optimize your practice, featuring Dayna Johnson
In this episode of the Dentistry Speaks podcast for the Speaking Consulting Network, host Kevin Henry talks with Dayna Johnson, Dentrix expert and founder of Novonee, about her sold-out AADOM presentation, "Top 10 PMS Features That Will Transform Your Daily Operations."
Johnson breaks down her top three takeaways: mapping out your schedule using perfect day scheduling to reduce error and support online booking, setting up automated tasks like payment posting and insurance benefit resets to save your team time, and using your practice management software to track production goals in real time instead of relying on disconnected spreadsheets.
The conversation also covers how to evaluate third-party software integrations before buying, including the specific, detailed questions practices should ask vendors to make sure data actually syncs where it needs to, and why most practices are using only 15% to 20% of what their software can actually do. Johnson makes the case for budgeting for ongoing software training in 2027, citing frequent software updates and high team turnover as two major reasons practices fall behind.
