Total Depravity (3) - The Conscience

The sermon argues against the Calvinist doctrine of total depravity by examining the role of the human conscience and the Holy Spirit in convicting individuals of sin. It outlines five distinct states of conscience—evil, seared, pure, weak, and good—to illustrate how moral awareness functions and evolves through spiritual maturity. The speaker emphasizes that the Holy Spirit actively works to reveal righteousness and judgment to all people, thereby validating the human capacity to choose faith. By contrasting these biblical principles with Calvinist interpretations, the text asserts that God's universal offer of salvation is sincere and accessible to everyone. Ultimately, the message encourages believers to cultivate a good conscience through scriptural knowledge and humility rather than relying on inherent depravity.

Made Sinners in Adam, Made Righteous in Christ

In Romans 5:12-21, Paul answers the question, "How can the obedience of one Man justify the multitudes of sinners who place their faith in them?" And his inspired answer was that since the guilt and sin of one man, Adam, was imputed to all his descendants (over whom he is head), then the righteousness of one Man, Christ Jesus, can be imputed to all that come under His headship by faith. The doctrines of original sin, human depravity, and imputation are difficult, but clear in Scripture and clearly foundational to the gospel. And understanding that sinners are condemned as sinners because of the sin of another (Adam) but can be received as righteous because of the works of another (Christ) is key to our gratitude, praise and security in Christ. Intro: Two Covenants and Two Heads (w/Catechism) I. Those in Adam have Adam's Sin Imputed (v12) II. ---That is Unfair! (vv13-14) III. ------That is Grace! (vv15-17) IV. Those in Christ have Christ's Righteousness Imputed (vv18-21)
