Strength, Protein, and Fat Loss: The Missing Keys for Women Over 40 with Ben Brown
In your journey to greater health and wellness, awareness always precedes momentum; sometimes the first move forward is simply to pause. Our host, Kelly Meehan, sits down with Ben Brown, founder of Body Systems. Ben’s work isn’t built on fads or formulas. It’s rooted in a deeper kind of wisdom: the kind that asks you to stop guessing and start noticing. Before progress can happen, he says, you have to see the truth of your habits—not what you think you’re doing, but the actual day-to-day reality in tangible, quantified terms. That means a whole lot of old-school pen-to-paper tracking: What are you eating? How are you moving? Are you sleeping well? And perhaps most importantly, are you even on your own calendar? “Show me your calendar and I’ll show you your priorities.” For so many women over 40 juggling careers, children, and never-ending to-do lists, the answer is no. Sticking to their calendar feels almost impossible. Their needs get pushed to the margins. But what if small changes—like walking after meals, adding protein to breakfast, or simply going to bed on time—could create a ripple effect? Ben’s clients learn that consistency doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly. It means doing the right things often enough to matter. It’s not glamorous. But it works—especially when paired with the courage to step back from stress, from busyness, from the belief that more is always better. True transformation doesn’t require a total overhaul. It asks for something quieter: a willingness to slow down, look closely, and take responsibility, without shame. A few meals. A few walks. A few honest decisions. Over time, that’s what reshapes a life. Not pressure. Not punishment. Just the slow, steady return to rhythm, resilience, and rest. What I Wish I Knew about Birth Control, Hormones and Faith with Alisha Banks
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your body isn’t to push harder, but to step back. Our host, Kelly Meehan, chats with Alisha Banks, whose story is a reminder that healing isn’t just physical—it’s spiritual, emotional, and deeply personal. What started with a decision to stop taking birth control led her through a health crisis that shook every part of her life. But it also uncovered something vital: healing doesn’t happen when we rush or force—it begins when we pause and listen. In the aftermath of her health scare, Alisha tried everything—detoxes, supplements, protocols. But instead of getting better, she became more depleted. Her body was overwhelmed. Her spirit, disconnected. It wasn’t until she began to approach her wellness from a place of faith and rest that things began to shift. Healing looked less like chasing the next fix and more like rebuilding trust in her body, in God’s timing, and in the quiet rhythms of daily life. Eating real food. Speaking Scripture over her body. Being present with her children. Asking for help. Letting go of control. There’s no perfect routine or silver bullet. But there is peace in slowing down long enough to notice what your body—and soul—actually need. For any woman standing at the edge of burnout or confusion, Alisha’s journey offers a gentle reminder: You don’t have to have all the answers today. Start with rest. Start with surrender. Because often, that’s exactly where true healing takes root. Struggling to Sleep? It Might Not Be What You Think
What if the breakthrough your body needs isn’t in doing more—but in letting it recover? Our host Kelly Meehan peels back the layers on one of the most overlooked keys to wellness: sleep. Sleep is more than rest—it’s repair. It’s when your brain detoxifies, your liver resets, your hormones rebalance, and your immune system strengthens. And when that’s disrupted, everything else—your mood, focus, digestion, even how your kids behave—can fall out of rhythm. As with anything worth attaining, there are no band-aid solutions. Supplements, diets, and trendy hacks can only take you so far if deep sleep isn’t in place. What’s often seen as optional is actually non-negotiable. We’re exploring why things like late-night screen time, blood sugar imbalances, and even emotional stress can quietly sabotage your rest. Kelly also dives into practical shifts: prioritizing protein and fat in your evening meals, catching natural light first thing in the morning, minimizing EMF exposure at night, and creating a truly restful sleep environment—dark, cool, and calm. And when it comes to kids, Kelly shines a light on how snoring, sensory issues, or speech delays might have roots in poor sleep—not poor behavior. It’s a call to look deeper, not harder. This isn’t about creating a perfect routine—it’s about supporting the one your body was always wired for. Sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s a return to something essential, simple, and sacred. So maybe the next step isn’t pushing harder. Maybe it’s honoring your need to pause—because real healing begins when we finally let our bodies do what they were made to do. Real Results, Real Life: Sarah’s Story
What happens when we stop blindly chasing outcomes and start building foundations—one quiet, intentional step at a time? Today our host Kelly Meehan sits down with Designed Family Wellness client Sarah to unpack her journey to embracing holistic health. Along the way, they unearth nuggets of wisdom not just around physical health, but also around mindset, family, and faith. She explains that chronic headaches—not excess weight—finally became her catalyst for real change. Weight loss had always been the surface-level goal, but this time, it was about healing from the inside out. Rather than rushing into trendy diets or rigid restrictions, Kelly invited her into a slower, more manageable routine that she could sustainably integrate into her lifestyle. This shift gave her space to build crucial foundations that allowed her to address inflammation, regulate hormones, and establish daily rhythms that brought emotional and mental stability. What surprised her most was just how personal it all felt—how her blood work became a story that is uniquely hers, thus mapping out a personalized path to healing. And as her migraines eased, so did the mental fog and emotional weight. And now she can approach losing physical weight with the right intention. At the heart of it all was her faith. Physical healing unlocked a spiritual openness, giving her more capacity to pray, serve, and see beyond herself. In the end, Sarah’s story isn't about restriction or perfection—it's about restoration and true healing. A return to wholeness and holiness that integrates body, mind, and soul, lived out slowly, steadily, and authentically. You Don't Need Another Plan - Just the Courage to Commit
This one’s for all the women out there who feel stuck. You’re stretched thin, juggling everything—schedules, to-do lists, lunch boxes—all on top of a full-time job. You take care of everyone and everything, but something is off. You feel sluggish. Hormonal. Your skin breaks out. Your emotions feel heavier than they should. Deep down, you know something has to change. So you reach for another plan. Another meal plan, another course, another supplement. Another attempt, another cycle. Months pass. Sometimes years. And you’re still not where you want to be. You’re still not healed. But the problem isn’t a lack of information, as you might believe. It’s fear. Fear that it won’t work. Fear that you’ll fail again. Our host Kelly Meehan’s message for you in today’s episode is simple: You don’t need another plan. You need to commit to the one that’s already in front of you. More research, more second opinions, and more backup strategies won’t give you the assurance you’re searching for. Assurance doesn’t come from endless preparation—it comes from knowing you’re not walking this path alone. Healing doesn’t happen when you feel “ready.” Healing begins when you commit, even in uncertainty. Align your goals with God’s will, then trust Him to take care of the rest. Celiac Disease Explained: Symptoms, Testing, and Healing
Celiac disease affects approximately 1 in 100 people. Yet, in the U.S., only about 30% of them are ever diagnosed. That means millions, including children, are walking around with an autoimmune condition that is silently damaging their bodies–without any idea that it’s happening. “The risk of developing another autoimmune condition increases with delayed diagnosis.” Listen in as our host Kelly Meehan covers one of the most misunderstood and overlooked diseases today. She discusses celiac disease’s far-reaching effects beyond digestive issues, including risks during pregnancy and the other autoimmune conditions that may develop due to delayed diagnosis, such as type 1 diabetes. Kelly also unpacks often-overlooked symptoms in children, such as constipation and neurological abnormalities, and why we need more comprehensive and widespread testing. You’ll discover how a gluten-free diet can make a life-changing difference as a celiac, and explore the two genes that determine who is most at risk of developing celiac disease. “Be your own advocate. If you sense something wrong, keep asking questions and find someone who is willing to listen.” Finally, our host dives into the variety of diagnostic tools available if you believe your child may have celiac disease—from blood tests to genetic screenings, and why it’s always worth undergoing a thorough evaluation if the condition runs in the family. The Rest Your Soul (and Your Kids) Are Craving
Juggling the demands of work, family, and personal aspirations often leaves us yearning for a more balanced life. This episode of Designed Foundations explores why incorporating true biblical rest in the home is foundational for every family. Our host, Kelly Meehan, sits down with her dear guest, Natalie Black, as she shares the profound impact that small, mindful changes to your day-to-day life can make. Drawing from both cultural contexts and biblical teachings, Natalie’s insights paint a picture of how true rest can positively transform our often hectic schedules. In a world where our identities are often tied to productivity, Natalie tells us that our worth is not defined by busyness for its own sake. By embracing our true identity as children of God, we can step back from societal pressures and focus on nurturing and healing not only ourselves, but our families as well. Natalie challenges the notion that everything hinges on our relentless involvement, stating that ultimate control rests with God. It’s important to find solace in the divine command to rest, to find peace in the midst of the chaos of modern life! Why Your Detox Isn’t Working—And What to Do Instead
“What if your body can’t eliminate the toxins it already has? If your drainage system is backed up, the toxins have absolutely nowhere to go.” Unlock the path to mastering the natural detoxification processes as our host Kelly Meehan explores the ins and outs of the body's drainage system! Exhaustion, brain fog, and skin issues–among other symptoms–could be your body's way of signaling a clogged drainage system. Before reaching for detox protocols or supplements, it’s important to ensure that your natural processes are working optimally. Through asking the right questions, you’ll learn to assess your drainage funnel’s efficiency and take practical steps to optimize it. “Supporting drainage is the first step before doing any detox or healing protocol.” Picture your body's drainage system as a kitchen sink, where the colon serves as the primary exit for waste. Clear pathways are crucial to prevent toxin buildup. You’ll get actionable tips to promote healthy digestion. Your liver and lymphatic health is also foundational in addressing issues like constipation and chronic inflammation. Steering clear of crutches like Miralax, one must uncover root causes and natural remedies such as bitter foods and castor oil packs, to name a couple, to aid liver function. One thing’s clear: As in all areas of health and wellness, it’s best to look to natural means first when optimizing your body’s drainage system. Remember, you are designed for health. When you support your health the way God intended, you will be amazed at how much better you feel! Key Topics: Understanding Your Body’s Drainage System (00:00) What is the Drainage Funnel? The Hidden Link Between Gluten and Mental Health
“Food doesn't just affect the body. It also affects the mind.” Today, our host, Kelly Meehan explores the link between gluten and mental health and walks us through the most common diseases gluten may lead to and why a gluten-free diet could be a powerful tool for those experiencing certain chronic conditions. When Kelly’s youngest daughter started experiencing mood swings, irritability, and joint pain, she was utterly mystified. That was until her celiac disease diagnosis opened her eyes to the potent link between gluten and mental health. Her daughter’s journey through gluten withdrawal and the subsequent improvement in her mental clarity was an eye-opener that showed the very real impact that gluten can have on our brain as well as our body. Gluten-induced inflammation may contribute to conditions like anxiety, depression, and brain fog. By considering gluten sensitivity as a potential root cause, it may help to try a gluten-free diet before immediately turning to long-term medication. At the same time, it’s important to know how to test for gluten sensitivity in the first place. “To truly heal, we must shift our focus from ‘one-size-fits-all’ to the individual.” Kelly wraps up by unpacking the gut-brain axis and the ins and outs of both celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. From there, we learn how to supercharge gut health with foods like bone broth and fermented vegetables while simultaneously eliminating gluten from the diet. Key Topics: How Removing Gluten Helped Kelly’s Daughter Overcome Celiac Disease (00:00) How Silent Gluten-Related Symptoms Can Creep Up on You (05:37) What is Gluten, and Where is it Normally Found? Gratitude: The Science-Backed Reset Your Body Needs
“Gratitude is not about ignoring the struggles. It’s about being able to hold space for the hard and the beautiful, about acknowledging that while life is messy, there are still things worth celebrating. Gratitude says, ‘Yes, this is hard, but I can still see what’s good.’” How far can an attitude of gratitude go in rewiring your brain, calming your central nervous system, and improving your physical health? Why Normal Lab Results Don’t Mean You’re Healthy: Unlocking Answers with Functional Blood Chemistry
“Your body is uniquely designed with its own blueprint for health and healing.” After years of watching her daughter struggle with unexplained health issues, our host Kelly Meehan, decided to take matters into her own hands. Traditional lab results had always deemed her "normal," but her symptoms told a different story. By seeking a second opinion from a naturopath, Kelly uncovered hidden health issues that standard tests had missed. This experience transformed her perspective on health and taught her the importance of looking for optimal levels, not just normal ones. Her story is a testament to the benefits of functional blood chemistry and how it can reveal your true health in a way conventional medicine often isn’t able to achieve. “In general, we don’t go to conventional doctors for ‘proactive’ medicine, but ‘reactive’ medicine.” Listen in as Kelly explains how American-standard lab ranges may sometimes offer a false sense of security, and why comprehensive testing is crucial for unearthing hidden health concerns. Finally, through a recent experience with a client, she drives home how blood sugar dysregulation and liver health can be addressed with targeted interventions–and illustrates the power of functional blood chemistry in treating the whole person, and not just isolated symptoms!
