The Fly (1986) – Don't Eat Hot Dogs While Watching This Movie

The Fly (https://tubitv.com/movies/629697/the-fly) (1986) Directed by David Cronenberg Starring: Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz, Joy Boushel If you haven't seen The Fly by now, this movie's f*cking 40 years old — just go watch it. David Cronenberg's body horror masterpiece takes a simple premise — scientist accidentally fuses his DNA with a fly — and turns it into one of the most effective, disturbing, and weirdly emotional horror films ever made. This is the first Cronenberg film we've covered properly on the show, and it immediately jumps into the conversation with the all-time greats of the genre. Jeff Goldblum delivers what might be the performance of his career, and once the body horror kicks in, it goes absolutely hard. In this episode, we discuss: Goldblum or Nothing — Could anyone other than Jeff Goldblum play Seth Brundle? We break down his mesmerizing slow decay and the way his eyes track like a fly through most of the film. Plus a quick case for Cronenberg as the undisputed king of body horror. Pacing Is Everything — 35 minutes before the fly even enters the telepod, and it's never boring. A full love story, character development, and world-building all before the goop starts flying. It's a masterclass in structuring a horror film. The Museum of Brundle Parts — Fingernails falling off, teeth dropping, a literal cabinet of discarded body parts. We dig into the practical effects, the dark humor, Brundlefly's "how to eat" scene, and the gymnastics stunt double who is so obviously not Jeff Goldblum. How's He Getting Food, Man? — The pregnancy subplot gets introduced and immediately abandoned. We have questions about how a man who never leaves his apartment keeps getting fresh donuts, where the fuck he keeps getting these baboons, and why Brundlefly busts in like Kool-Aid Man. We Also Talked About: - The Face with Two Left Feet (https://archive.org/details/the-face-with-two-left-feet) (1979) (Internet Archive) — A bizarre Italian Saturday Night Fever knockoff about a hotel cook who vaguely resembles John Travolta and falls for a club DJ at the height of disco fever. His friends shave his mustache and the gag runs for another 45 minutes. It was fine. - The Thin Blue Line (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8he3hz) (1988) (DailyMotion) — Errol Morris's landmark true crime documentary investigating the 1979 murder of a Dallas police officer and the wrongful conviction it produced. Laid the groundwork for modern true crime storytelling. - It Ends (https://link.amazon/B0cnfZilH) (2025) (Amazon) — A claustrophobic indie film where four friends on a last road trip discover they're on a road that doesn't end. 90% of the movie is four people in a car. Intriguing but ultimately non-eventful. - June 17th, 1994 (https://www.netflix.com/title/70144640) (2010) (Netflix)— ESPN 30 for 30 doc about the most chaotic day in sports history: OJ's Bronco chase, the Knicks in the NBA Finals, the World Cup kicking off, and Arnold Palmer's final US Open round — all on the same day. - I Pity the Fool (https://www.netflix.com/title/81788481) (Netflix) — A Mr. T documentary that starts as a decent profile of the man behind the persona and devolves into a weird, one-sided takedown. Even Hulk Hogan put down the shtick sometimes. - Harley Flanagan: Wired for Chaos (https://tubitv.com/movies/100046401/) (Tubi) — A raw, well-made documentary about the Cro-Mags founding member and hardcore punk legend, with appearances from Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, and Roger Miret. Night Terrors (1993) and The Mangler (1995): A Tobe Hooper Double Feature

Night Terrors (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qNdRvGuoUA) (1993) Directed by Tobe HooperStarring: Robert Englund, Zoe Trilling, Ilona Kimi, William Finley What if the Marquis de Sade had a descendant running an eye-gouging cult in Egypt, and also there's a naked guy flopping around on horseback for no reason? This week we're kicking off HorrorWeen with the first half of our Tobe Hooper double feature, and we honestly still don't know what happened in this movie. Tobe Hooper didn't direct this so much as he got handed a flaming turd on his doorstep and had to stomp it out. In this episode, we discuss: Snake Blowjobs and a Flopping Dick on a Horse — We try to make sense of a movie featuring a woman repeatedly putting a live snake in her mouth across multiple scenes, a naked dude on horseback trotting around a beach for a full minute, and zero explanation for any of it. We debate whether the snake thing is erotic or just erratic. A Shitty Tales from the Crypt That Went On for 40 Extra Minutes — Night Terrors feels like it should've been a 45-minute anthology segment. It meanders between two time periods, introduces a horse race guy who vanishes for 80 minutes, kills random people for no reason, and makes Robert Englund chewing every piece of scenery feel like an exercise in trivial bullshit. Maximum Confusion, Minimum Coherence — We get into Zoe Trilling's performance as one of the worst we've seen, how this thing looks like a USA Up All Night production shot in Israel, and how neither of us could follow it even after talking about it for 20 minutes. The Mangler (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtJw5XN_0kE) (1995) Directed by Tobe HooperStarring: Robert Englund, Ted Levine, Daniel Matmore How do you turn a 12-page Stephen King short story into an hour and 46-minute movie about a possessed laundry-folding machine? You get more drugs, that's how. The second half of our Tobe Hooper double feature is a movie where a demonic steam press eats people, nobody ever pushes the goddamn tension bar, and the voice of Winnie-the-Pooh provided the monster noises but was so embarrassed he was relieved his name was misspelled in the credits. In this episode, we discuss: Steampunk David Lynch Dune, But It's a Laundromat — Ted Levine drives a '90s Jeep through a contemporary town, but the second you step inside the factory it's the 1930s and everyone's wearing doilies. The machine is the size of a dump truck, and the whole movie has the color palette of someone who just discovered HDR in 2002. It is offensively ugly. "Are You a Virgin?" (Asked Four Times, Laughed Four Times) — Mark, the '90s mall goth with a duster and a mullet, is the best character in this movie. Ted Levine tells him don't say the word virgin, don't get out of the car, don't talk to the witness — within seconds he's punching this woman in the face with the virgin question. The Power of Christ Folds Your Linens — We spoil the ending because who cares. The machine seems dead after an exorcism, everyone celebrates, then it re-demonizes because Ted Levine popped antacids containing belladonna — which we're pretty sure isn't a thing in antacids. The machine transforms into walking bad '90s CG, and it's so stupid you might actually laugh. I'm Starting to Think Maybe Tobe Hooper Didn't Make a Lot of Great Movies — We close the book on Tobe Hooper for a while, discussing how The Mangler actually improves when watched right after Night Terrors, how it bombed despite starring Englund, Levine, King, and Hooper, and why Jim Cummings — the voice of Winnie-the-Pooh — did the Mangler's demon noises and later said it wasn't worth the effort. His name was misspelled as Tim Cummings in the credits. He considered that a win. New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010) – These Kids Just Started Killing Themselves

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010) (https://tubitv.com/movies/437414/tucker-dale-vs-evil) Director: Eli Craig Starring: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss What if the scary hillbillies in every horror movie were just two sweet guys trying to fix up their vacation cabin? This week we dive into the cult classic horror-comedy Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil — a movie that bombed at the box office but built a devoted following by flipping every backwoods slasher trope on its head. In this episode, we discuss: "A Series of Unfortunate Events" — How the movie's genius writing chains escalating misunderstandings and bad luck into college kids accidentally offing themselves while Tucker and Dale just try to drink beer and fish. The beehive-chainsaw-Leatherface dance alone is worth the price of admission. The Chemistry That Shouldn't Work But Does — Labine and Tudyk didn't know each other before filming, but their buddy dynamic carries the whole movie. We discuss whether a sequel would ruin the magic and why it might work better as a half-hour TV show. Horror Movie? Or Just a Movie With Dead People In It? — A debate on whether this even qualifies as horror when there's zero tension and no villain. The gore ranges from impressively practical to questionable 2010 CG, but the comedy lands so consistently you barely notice — until the third act starts running on fumes. "I'll Provide the Finger Sandwiches" — Our favorite gags, including Tucker pouring PBR over his amputated bowling fingers, the wood chipper scene that's somehow hilarious, and why the DVD bonus feature "Tucker and Dale Are Evil" is worth hunting down on physical media. We Also Talked About: Honey Don't! (https://www.netflix.com/title/82147511) (2025) (Netflix) — Ethan Coen's solo effort with Margaret Qualley as a small-town PI. Coen formula watered down — despite the sex and dark humor, it's mostly boring. Verdict: don't watch it. Ren Faire (https://link.amazon/A0iwFUXAX) (2024) (Amazon) — HBO's three-part doc about a massive Texas Renaissance Festival with its own town and police force. Game of Thrones meets Ren Fest as the aging king tries to retire and find a mail-order bride. Highly entertaining. Lady Bird (https://link.amazon/A05vC3RDd)(2017) (Amazon) — Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age film with Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Laurie Metcalf, and Beanie Feldstein. Sean's weekend watch with his daughter and a genuinely great movie. The Evil That Men Do (https://tubitv.com/movies/466934/the-evil-that-men-do) (1984) (Tubi) — Charles Bronson revenge flick where the bad guy is the drunk dog guy from Seinfeld. Features nipple electrocution and Bronson allegedly kicking a dude's ass by his dick. Entertaining but forgettable. Secret Mall Apartment (https://www.netflix.com/watch/82677429) (Netflix) — Artists who lived inside a hollowed-out section of a Providence, RI mall for years, sneaking couches through sewer tunnels. A fun watch about gentrification and starving artists. Big Shark (https://tubitv.com/movies/100063910/big-shark) (2023) (Tubi) — Tommy Wiseau's follow-up to The Room. A wobbly-camera shark movie set in New Orleans that takes three sittings to finish — but once the shark shows up, it's exactly as stupid and entertaining as you'd hope. Also mentioned: The Big Lebowski, Burn After Reading, Miller's Crossing, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Room, Death Wish, Shaun of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, District 9, Scream, Seinfeld, and PBR powder.
