Nearly two decades ago, when I was 30, I left the UK with a round-the-world ticket, and no plan to return. I left in secret and in shame. I then spent 7 months drifting through Dubai, India, Hong Kong, South East Asia, and finally on to Australia.
Back then, I scribbled everything down in internet cafés—before smartphones and curated feeds—trying to capture the mess, the magic, and the madness of real travel. This is that diary, finally out of the hard drive and into the world.
This isn’t polished travel blogging or viral social media nonsense. It’s unfiltered, unedited, and brutally honest.

Four months without TV and my first trip back to the big screen ends with an alien film so bad I can’t even remember its name. I ponder the baffling spelling of “Filipino” before heading on to Borneo, where a pre‑planned dive trip goes tits up and I end up sharing a dorm with a Swedish man doing something you should never do in shared accommodation (unless you're very discreet). Enjoy this latest reminder that not every adventure ends in sunsets and postcard views. Watch a behind-the-sc...

Saying Goodbye to the Three Little Indian Kids
This is when I say goodbye to the three street kids from Pushkar. I'd given one of them my old jacket, thinking that was the end of it. But the next morning, true to their word, they turned up to see me off. Having walked for half an hour just to wave goodbye. This isn’t one of those epic travel stories with tuk-tuks flipping off cliffs or temples in the mist. It’s quiet. Small. But it’s stayed with me for almost two decades. Because sometimes the stuff that sticks isn’t what you expect...

The Delhi Room Con
Enjoy 'The Delhi Room Con', a vivid snapshot of arriving in India in the middle of the night, convinced I was too street-smart to get scammed. Spoiler: I wasn’t. What followed was my first real taste of India, complete with dodgy "official" taxi stands, fake hotel calls, cricket chat I didn’t understand, and a room so horrendous I made a vow never to be that tight again. This clip is taken from episode 1 which you can listen on Apple Podcasts HERE or HERE on Spotify if that works better...

The Bumwee Challenge
Welcome to 'The Bumwee Challenge': part science experiment, part survival story, mostly just diarrhoea! After a suspicious bowl of cold rice, I spent the night locked in battle with my digestive system. This one features stopwatch experiments, a fading sense of dignity and one man's aim to outwit his own arse. Enjoy! The Udaipur Toilet Story
What started as a laid-back sightseeing day in Udaipur quickly spiralled into one of the most uncomfortable (and traumatic) toilet emergencies of my entire trip. One minute I’m being shown around the City Palace and casually chatting about Hindu mythology and spiritual lake blessings…the next I’m gripping the back of Hassan's motorbike, clenching like my life depends on it. The whole time praying to Ganesh that my sphincter can hold out. What followed was a frantic dash through the streets of...

The Beast Beneath the Waves
An extract from ‘Face To Face with a Thresher Shark’. Appearing out of nowhere, huge, silent and close enough to touch. One flick of its absurdly long tail and it vanished into the blue like it had never been there at all. Listen to the full episode on Spotify here. Tuk Tuk Drivers & The Man on The Mattress
Here’s an eye-opening snippet from Cambodia & The Shrinking Penis Myth. Hear how I chose my tuk-tuk driver and met the unforgettable old man on the mattress, whose sagging testicle inspired some surprising truths about aging. When the Moon Stole the Sky
Enjoy this bitesize clip from Episode 2 where I describe a sunrise so beautiful and surreal, I was relieved not to have a camera with me. This is a wonderful reminder that we should all look up and appreciate the world more, because you never quite know when a fleeting moment is destined to become one of life’s most precious memories. Cambodia & The Shrinking Penis Myth
In this episode, I share the realities of travelling through Cambodia. What should have been a simple journey turns into a slow eight-hour boat trip through shrinking waterways and dense jungle, giving a true taste of off-the-beaten-path adventure. I reflect on the contrasts of Cambodia, its youthful population full of energy and joy, juxtaposed with the haunting shadows of its recent tragic history. From chaotic tuk-tuk rides with friendly locals to staying in one of the worst rooms I’ve eve...

Before Screens Sold Us Our Insecurities
No need for an ‘SEO-friendly-keyword-flooded-encyclopedic-breakdown’ of what this bitesize clip from episode 1 is all about. Just invest 3 minutes from your busy schedule and give it a listen. Share it if you agree. Move your thumbs and choose something else if you don’t. I’m good either way. Just as long as the algorithm and the robots aren’t pestering us to optimise engagement, then I’m happy. Listen to the full opening episode where this clip was taken from HERE on Apple Podcasts. ...

It Started With a Message
This isn’t the official trailer, but it’s probably the closest thing to one for now. In this bitesize clip from the opening episode I talk about why I’m finally publishing the words I wrote all those years ago. You’ll hear how my nephew read a piece of my diary about scuba diving that left a lasting impression on him. How I’d managed to capture something he'd felt himself but couldn’t quite put into words. And how his reaction made me wonder who else this might speak to in 2025.&n...

Face to Face with a Thresher Shark
If you’re new here, check out the opening episode here on Apple Podcasts or here on Spotify, where I explain what this raw, personal, and very much “in the moment” travel diary is all about. Here's a bitesize clip if you haven't got half an hour to spare! Listen on Spotify here if that's your thing. These 18 year old memoirs were never written as a polished travel blog. Nor a way to make money or go viral (I don’t think “going viral” was even a thing back in 2007). These ...

Why I’m Finally Sharing This (After 18 Years)
Click HERE to listen to a bitesize clip from this episode. Or HERE if you'd prefer Spotify! Hi, I'm Richard. 18 years ago, after yet another failed business venture sent me into depression and soul-searching I decided to run away from my troubles in shame and in secret. This was 2007. Before smartphones, before Instagram, before travel became an endless feed of staged selfies and 20-second TikTok videos. I poured out my thoughts and experiences onto my Facebook ‘Wall’, a feature they cr...
