Diogenes Club | E32 - Everything's Expensive, You Can Vote About It
Nick Paro and Dr. Eric Lullove open today running on fumes, and they get to the point fast: everything is expensive, one party controls all three branches, and Nick puts it plainly — “There’s one party to blame for all of it being really, really expensive right now.” The fix they push all hour is a ballot cast on or before Tuesday, November 3, with a friend in tow and the whole ticket researched, judges and county boards included. Eric reads a prepared statement on Pete Hegseth’s address to senior military leadership, casting him “as a cable news pundit running a frat house orientation,” and Nick answers that a retired officer can be recalled to face UCMJ charges because “UCMJ is forever.” The two then turn to the Cornell fraternity case, where Nick sets the floor without hedging: “Anything but an enthusiastic yes means no.” This discussion treats rising prices, institutional sabotage, and impunity as one story, and argues the November vote is where listeners can still write the ending. The back half becomes a constitutional seminar. Eric walks the pardon power through Article II, Ex parte Garland, Ford’s pardon of Nixon, Bush’s pardon of Caspar Weinberger, and Trump v. United States, and concludes the real check is political — impeachment and removal, which a future Congress will struggle to reach at two-thirds. Nick proposes making any surviving pardon power independently reviewable before it takes effect, and Eric explains why outsourcing accountability to the ICC fails: the U.S. never ratified the Rome Statute, and the 2002 American Service-Members’ Protection Act blocks cooperation with the court. They close on a program rather than a lament — refund social services so a 911 call can route to a mental-health responder, demand a Speaker of the House who will actually hold the purse strings, and remember, in Eric’s words, that “our country was founded because we didn’t want to live under the boot of a king.” Eric is off for several weeks starting next Thursday, and Nick plans to bring in fill-in co-hosts rather than pause the show. People, Orgs, and Terms Mentioned People: * Pete Hegseth — Secretary of Defense; the target of Eric’s prepared statement and Nick’s UCMJ argument * Josh Hawley — Missouri senator Eric flags as positioning for a 2028 run after calling for a national abortion ban * Hakeem Jeffries — House Democratic leader Nick says is not the person to lead impeachment and accountability Organizations / Programs: * International Criminal Court (ICC) — the court Eric explains the U.S. has blocked itself from relying on * CMS, FAA, FTC, FCC — agencies whose administrators and deputies Eric says need accountability too, not just cabinet secretaries Terms / Concepts: * Preemptive pardon — clemency granted before charges or conviction; Eric cites Ex parte Garland (1866) as the precedent * UCMJ — the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which Nick argues still binds retired officers who can be recalled * American Service-Members’ Protection Act (2002) — the “Hague Invasion Act,” which bars U.S. cooperation with the ICC * Cloture — the 60-vote Senate threshold Eric says Democrats need to move legislation Actions You Can Take Get your Sick of this Shit merch! * Check out the Sick of this Shop! Diogenes Club | E31 - Gene Pool Management
Summary Nick and Eric open with the week’s biggest disability-rights blow: a federal judge in Texas v. Kennedy approved a joint resolution from the DOJ, HHS, and plaintiff states that vacates the 2024 Section 504 rule’s community integration mandate, including its definition of “most integrated setting.” Eric walks through what survives — web and mobile accessibility, medical diagnostic equipment standards, and non-discrimination in child welfare and medical treatment — while Nick argues that the real damage is a Justice Department that will no longer back people who file integration complaints against any federally funded school, hospital, employer, or airport. The hosts name the pattern bluntly as gene pool management and eugenics: pushing disabled people out of classrooms, workplaces, and public view and back toward institutions. From there the conversation widens to chronic stress, grocery and airfare prices, a proposal for Congress to sue the executive branch, and vaccine policy. Eric closes with a concrete prescription for November 3rd: verify your registration twice, vote every line of the ballot, bring someone with you, and keep watching after the polls close. Diogenes Club | E30 - The Department of Health & Human Sacrifices
Summary Nick Paro and Dr. Eric Lullove welcome in guest Jason Odell — photographer, biologist, and co-host of Latchkey Hour — to argue that HHS under RFK Jr. has inverted the mission statement Dr. Lullove reads aloud on air. Dr. Lullove reports that the Lancaster County coroner has released pathology on two infant deaths: a six-week-old who died August 18 of measles, and Ivan Miller, who died August 14 of a ruptured spleen with measles listed as a significant condition, and that the CDC still has not officially recognized the fatalities. Odell, who holds a PhD in biology, sets that against the actual history of American eugenics — Mendel, the 1930s sterilization programs, the syphilis experiments run on Black Americans — and then names the sorting mechanism the episode keeps returning to: it isn’t genes anymore, it’s money. Dr. Lullove says it flatly — “It’s not your genes, it’s your pocketbook” — and stacks the receipts: a Senate HELP Committee projection that the Medicare trust fund goes insolvent by 2034, a Republican fix that quietly raises FICA on employers and paychecks instead of lifting the $184,000 Social Security cap, and a $440 monthly cut to Social Security checks if nothing changes. Odell supplies the household version: his premium up 600% after subsidies lapsed, and $270 out of pocket for each of two blood draws he needs next week. The second half is about what the money buys instead. Paro walks the Cook Political Report Senate map — six toss-ups in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, with 52 as the only number that changes anything — while Dr. Lullove tallies roughly $1.5 billion in monument spending: a triumphal arch pitched at $100 million, a billion-dollar ballroom, the Kennedy Center, and a National Garden of American Heroes with 250 life-size statues. All three read the new Space Force dress uniforms the same way, and Paro, an Army veteran, declines to treat it as a joke. Gallup is the closest thing to good news: 89% of American adults now call the federal government corrupt, the highest figure in twenty years, with the sharpest movement among Democrats (57% to 91%) and independents (78% to 90%), and Supreme Court approval at a record-low 33% after Republican approval of the Court fell 21 points to 58%. The ask at the end is far smaller than any of it — Nieta Greene’s Say No to Crip Crow campaign, collecting sign-ups for lobbying, phone banking, and legislator meetings to codify Olmstead into the ADA through the Curtis Wilson Act.
