[…] Bishop wasn't the band's singer, though, so few who heard or bought the record probably ever knew that it was actually Mickey Thomas they were hearing. In 1977, Mickey Thomas had released his first solo album, As Long As You Love Me, which featured members of Booker T and the MGs. The album didn't do very well, but it included a funky cover of the Airplane Somebody to Love. Ironically, it wasn't even Mickey's choice to put the song on his album. The producer selected it. In fact, Mickey wasn't even a fan of the airplane or most of the music that had come out of the San Francisco scene. The proprietor of the Old Waldorf, Jeff Pollack, had recommended Mickey to Bill Thompson, who then invited the singer to try out for Jefferson Starship, but there was one problem. […]
