Discourse matters is a podcast that facilitates both comfortable and uncomfortable conversations as a reminder that, because you exist what you desire to speak up about matters. Our voices give significance and power to our respective causes, therefore we ought to give ourselves permission to use these voices.
On this podcast we intend to create wealth with wisdom by having conversations that can lead us to ourselves and our power. So grab a seat, get comfortable and let's talk about it!
Discourse host reflects on lessons learned and lessons endured while checking the pulse of the past year with industry experts.

Community: Relationships really are a forever thing
“Relationships are eternal. The ‘separation’ is another chapter in the relationship. Often, letting go of the old form of the relationship becomes a lesson in pure love much deeper than any would have learned had the couple stayed together.” - Marriane Willamson
“I make my ramen the way a friend taught me in eleventh grade. Every fall, I listen to a playlist made for me by a boy I drove across a border to hook up with. I eat sushi because a girl who won't talk to me anymore made me try it, and Indian food because my best friend's parents ordered for me before I knew what l liked. There are movies I love because someone I loved, loved them first. I am a mosaic of everyone I've ever loved, even for a heartbeat.” - Unknown

You do not have to work for everything you deserve
“As children, we were taught to be ‘good’ boys and girls, which of course implies we were not that already. We were taught we’re good if we clean up our room, we’re good if we make good grades. Very few of us were taught that we’re essentially good. Very few of us were given a sense of unconditional approval, a feel that we’re precious because of what we are, not what we do. And that’s not because we were raised by monsters. We were raised by people who were raised by the same way we were. Sometimes, in fact, it was the people who loved us the most who felt it was their responsibility to train us to struggle.” - Marianne Willamson

Quieten the self doubt: You are spectacular
“Self doubt will drown you deeper than any ocean ever could. I hope you learn to swim above other people’s waves and energy and soak in your own. I hope you can learn that your power doesn’t lay in what others think you’re capable of, but instead, in what you yourself, believe you are.” - Billy Chapata

Commitment: Finishing, Quitting and Pausing
“Remember that you can quit ‘the thing’ without quitting on yourself. Remember that persistence and fluidity can coexist.” - Michell Clark

Self Commitment: Devotion and Discipline
We should start to see and think of it as devotion. Because our commitment to ourselves should be rooted in love and not self-loathe.

Let’s talk about love: You are not difficult to love.
“Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back in our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our purpose on earth. To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life. Meaning does not lie in things. Meaning lies in us.” -Marrian Willamson

Chit chat: Check in
“It’s not possible to constantly hold onto crisis. You have to have the love and you have to have the magic. That’s also life.” - Toni Morrison
I hope this season is every bit of magic you didn’t know you needed. Welcome back!

Dear diary: unbecoming to become
"Look, we are not unspectacular things.
We've come this far, survived this much.
What would happen if we decided to survive more? To love harder? What if we stopped being terrified, if we launched our demands into the sky, made ourselves so big...."
— Ada Limón

Rise in love.
We should be thinking more about love and we should certainly be doing more from love. “Everywhere we learn that love is important, and yet we are bombarded by its failure. In the realm of the political, among the religious, in our families, and in our romantic lives, we see little indication that love informs decisions, strengthens our understanding of community, or keeps us together. This bleak picture in no way alters the nature of our longing. We still hope that love will prevail.
We still believe in love's promise.” - bell hooks

Pulse check: How are you, really?
How are you? “Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.” -bell hooks

Refuse to be indifferent!
Remember everything that is not love, goodness and peace relies on you to be indifferent. So, refuse to be indifferent always! "I insist on being shocked. I am never going to become immune. I think that's a kind of failure to see so much of it that you die inside. I want to be surprised and shocked every time"
- Toni Morrison

Waiting in stillness
Waiting seasons are so loud with advice of what to do and what not to do, stress and trying figure it out. I, however, am an advocate of waiting in stillness. This stillness doesn’t erase action but rather stabilises self in order to navigate it all. Surrender and be obedient to the season. In all you do keep your heart soft.

Reclaiming our lives
We have to keep trying to reclaim our lives because one day we will be able to do it permanently. We have to keep reclaiming our lives because one day we get full ownership of it!
I hope you know that you have to keep trying not because you will one day win but because the answers are in the continuous trial and error. And the answers aren't just for you but for many generations to come. And perhaps
that's the win.

Holding rejection up to the light
In this episode we speak about my theme of the year: Holding rejection up to the light and what that looks like.
“you see this life is so long and fulfilling that today you are rejected and feeling dazed & tomorrow your very destabilised woes are held with regard and welcomed home. I cannot for certain promise that we all find romantic love after turmoil, but we do find our people. we do.” -Nwai

Failing forward
On this episode we speak about what failing forward has looked like in starting this podcast and what discourse matters is all about. “Maybe it starts exactly where you are. Maybe it’s starts with the decision to choose yourself regardless of where your footing is currently. Regardless of who is standing by your side or who isn’t. Maybe it starts exactly where you are.” - Billy Chapata
