Episode 163: The Good Daughter Trap: Cultural Expectations, Guilt & Finding Yourself | Dr. Natasha Ramzan
What happens when the version of you that your family, culture, and community expect is different from the person you’re becoming?
In this episode of Discover Your Joy, we’re diving into generational trauma, cultural identity, and the invisible expectations that can shape how we work, rest, build relationships, and define success. Dr. Natasha Ramzan, clinical psychologist and founder of Inner Voice Therapy, joins us to unpack how the patterns passed down through our families can become so deeply ingrained that we don’t even realize we’re living by them.
We’re talking about the pressure to be the “good daughter,” the guilt that comes with choosing your own path, and why so many eldest and only daughters become the responsible ones who carry everyone else’s emotional weight. This is a conversation about honouring where you come from without losing yourself in the process and learning how to create a life that actually feels like your own.
In this episode:
• How generational trauma can show up in your work ethic, relationships, and ability to rest
• The difference between cultural values, family expectations, and patterns that may no longer serve you
• Why breaking generational cycles doesn’t mean rejecting your culture or cutting off your family
• Why achieving the thing you worked so hard for might not bring the fulfillment you expected
• The hidden roles eldest and only daughters can carry and how those roles follow them into adulthood
• How to tell the difference between healthy guilt and the shame that comes from going against family expectations
• Why setting boundaries can feel so difficult, and how to start honouring your needs without creating unnecessary conflict
• How to acknowledge the pain of your childhood while still holding space for gratitude and compassion
• Why rest can feel uncomfortable when your nervous system has learned to associate productivity with safety
• How to begin finding your own inner voice without feeling like you have to choose between two cultures
• What it can look like to break old patterns gently, without putting pressure on yourself to get everything right
