AI "Intimacy" Is a Dangerous Trap | MIT Professor Dr. Sherry Turkle on Disruptor Confessions

Are AI companions replacing human connection? MIT professor Dr. Sherry Turkle joins Disruptor Confessions to expose the hidden traps of artificial intimacy."We are moving into a culture where people are looking to technology not because they are fascinated by it, but because they want it to substitute for human connection."Is artificial intelligence coming quietly for our capacity for human attachment? In this deep-dive episode of Disruptor Confessions, host John Ayers sits down with legendary MIT professor, psychologist, and author Dr. Sherry Turkle. Drawing from her groundbreaking research and writing on technology and the human self, Sherry exposes the hidden psychological traps of AI companionships, the illusion of "fake empathy," why we are biologically hardwired to personify chatbots, and the profound risks this technology poses to children, relationships, and democratic society.🎙 DISRUPTOR CONFESSIONS with John Ayers | Unfiltered conversations on technology, leadership, and the human realities of digital disruption.🚀 Key Topics Discussed:* The Artificial Intimacy Trap: Why designing AI to mimic human relationship is fundamentally different from traditional tools and why it short-circuits human vulnerability.* Darwinian Buttons & Personification: Why our brains are biologically wired to treat chatbots, avatars, and companion algorithms as real people, even when we consciously know they aren't.* The First-Person Deception: How conversational AI's routine use of "I" and "We" creates a dangerous illusion of mutual understanding and emotional reciprocity.* Frictionless Empathy: The subtle psychological shift that occurs when we substitute messy, high-friction human empathy for frictionless, compliant machine sycophancy.* Grief Tech & Virtual Reconstructions: The ethical and psychological fallout of creating AI avatars of deceased loved ones and historical figures.* The Danger to Children: Why treating AI as a friend, tutor, or confidant for kids risks de-skilling the next generation's capacity for real-world connection.👨🏫 Featured Guest:* Dr. Sherry Turkle* Abby Rockefeller Mauze Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology, MIT* Author, Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines, Alone Together, and Reclaiming Conversation* Website: https://sherryturkle.mit.edu/🚀 JOIN THE DISRUPTION COMMUNITY👉 Subscribe to THE BRIEFING on Substack: https://disruptorconfessions.substack.com/👉 Visit Disruptor Confessions: https://disruptorconfessions.com/👉 Connect with John Ayers on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnlayers/👉 YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@DisruptorConfessions John Ayers,Sherry Turkle,Disruptor Confessions, artificial intimacy,AI companions,AI ethics, tech psychology, artificial intelligence risks,AI relationships,Alone Together,Reclaiming Conversation,AI empathy, human vulnerability, tech philosophy, generative AI dangers,AI safety,MIT,AI chatbots, artificial intelligence psychology, human connection

Privacy Is Already Lost. The Real Fight Is Over Manipulation | Disruptor Confessions with John Ayers

"It's a heat-seeking missile that can actually try to overcome your defenses. We are not prepared for that."~ Louis B. RosenbergFor 35 years, Louis Rosenberg has built the technology now showing up on everyone's face. He constructed the first augmented reality system at NASA in 1991, holds over 300 patents, and founded Unanimous AI in 2014. He's not worried that Meta's smart glasses can record you without consent. He's worried about the earbud nobody's talking about — the one whispering in your ear, learning exactly which argument works on you, and adapting in real time until it does.If you've ever wondered why the backlash to Meta's Ray-Bans focuses on the wrong camera, wondered what an AI ad sounds like when it's built for an audience of one, or wondered whether a swarm of bees has anything to teach a company full of humans, this one is for you.🎙 Disruptor Confessions explores the human, ethical, and strategic dimensions of technological disruption.🚀 Key topics discussed:The Evil Coder Thought Experiment: Rosenberg's mental model for the single most dangerous AI wearable you could design, and why it's already being built for entirely different reasons.Cameras Out, Earbuds In: Why the privacy debate over recording is "a lost battle," and why the real threat is the AI agent whispering in your ear.The Heat-Seeking Missile: How adaptive AI turns advertising and persuasion from a broadcast pitch into a system that learns your objections and overcomes them one by one.Why You'll Wear One Anyway: The flip-phone-to-smartphone parallel, and why Rosenberg thinks wearable adoption goes mainstream within five years, even among people certain they never will.Pervert Glasses vs. the Real Danger: Why the backlash against Meta's Ray-Bans is aimed at the wrong problem entirely. From Bees to Boardrooms: How Rosenberg's research into bee swarms and fish schools led to Unanimous AI's platform for connecting hundreds of people into one collective decision.Solving the Cocktail Party Problem: The AI trick that let 500 people across seven languages have one real conversation and actually converge on an answer.Keeping Humans in the Loop: Why Rosenberg believes swarm intelligence, not a purely artificial superintelligence, is the only survivable path forward. The Confession: The prediction Rosenberg got wrong by 20 years, and the one he's now watching arrive faster than he expected. What Gets Erased: What it will feel like to know the voice in your phone is smarter than you are.𝗗𝗿. The Death of Shared Reality | Why Personalization Is Quietly Erasing Us | Joseph Turow

"Most people have no clue about the kinds of data that companies are really taking about them, and even whether it's legal or not."~ Joseph TurowFor 50 years, Joseph Turow has studied the industry that decides what you see, what you don't see, and who you become because of it. The New York Times calls him the expert on media fragmentation. He's written 13 books and over 160 articles, and his newest, The Problem With Personalization, argues that the real threat was never that companies are watching you. It's that they're quietly building you your own private world. If you've ever wondered why your TV seems to know what's on your couch, felt the specific dread of your neighbor living in a completely different version of the news, or just assumed personalized ads were a fair trade for a free internet, this one is for you.🎙 Disruptor Confessions explores the human, ethical, and strategic dimensions of technological disruption.🚀 Key topics discussed:Predictive, Generative, Agentic: Turow breaks down the three stages of AI-driven personalization, and what he calls "the unending spiral of personalization" that agentic AI is about to accelerate. From Segmentation to Monoculture: Why two neighbors watching Fox and MSNBC used to be audience segmentation, and why the next stage isn't different audiences, it's "communities of one."Nobody Reads a Privacy Policy: Turow read a realtor's privacy policy so you don't have to. It quietly claims the right to your Social Security number, your location, and whether you're shopping with a competing agent.Your TV Is Building a Profile on You: How smart TVs read pixels to identify what you're watching, slip a couch ad into the background of your own living room, and feed Walmart's VIZIO-powered retail media network.Digital Resignation: Turow's national survey data on why most Americans aren't okay with data tracking, they're just exhausted, and why advertisers mistake that exhaustion for informed consent.Regulation Won't Save You: Why Turow doesn't think government fixes this, why he's skeptical of paying people for their data, and what actually moves companies instead. What Gets Erased: As personalization deepens, Turow argues we lose the friction of understanding people who disagree with us, and why that friction is what actually builds a community. The Confession: Why Turow worries less about his own generation and more about his grandkids, and why he thinks no political leader is taking this seriously enough to do anything about it."If we allow privacy problems to go out of control, we're going to end up with isolation."~ Joseph Turow𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘄Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Media Systems and Industries, Annenberg School for Communication, University of PennsylvaniaAuthor, The Problem With PersonalizationAuthor, Breaking Up America (1996)Featured by The New York Times, BBC, CBS, Fresh Air, The Atlantic, and OxfordEmail: fjt@upenn.edu 🚀 JOIN THE DISRUPTION COMMUNITY👉 Subscribe to THE BRIEFING on Substack: https://disruptorconfessions.substack...👉 Visit Disruptor Confessions: https://disruptorconfessions.com/👉 Follow us on Instagram: @disruptorconfessions👉 Connect with John Ayers on LinkedIn: /in/johnlayersDisruption isn't a distant concept, it's happening right now, reshaping careers, industries, and the human experience itself.
