From Discovery to Family: Ed and Kami's Story
An unexpected visit from his sister changed Ed's life forever. She came bearing news of a possible surprise child--a previously unknown genetic relative who showed up as a niece that no one knew. A surprise child, thought Ed? Is it really possible?! Ed's willingness to consider it possible and to send off for a 23andMe test the very next day changed the trajectory of both Ed's and Kami's future...and the shape of their families...forever. Listen in on this special Father's Day edition of DNA Clarity and Support to hear the story as told from Ed's perspective as a late-discovery biological father as well as from that of his newly-discovered biological daughter, Kami. Their story offers a rare opportunity to hear how a DNA discovery unfolds on both sides of the relationship. You'll hear what navigating uncertainty looked like for each of them, how their expectations evolved over time, and how a discovery that began in late 2020 grew into a close and lasting family connection that now includes regular gatherings with an expanded circle of relatives. In this episode, you'll hear: • How Ed's wife's background as a social worker helped shape the family's response • How Kami's understanding of what she needed—and what she hoped for—changed throughout the journey • Why Ed turned to an online support group and the value of writing down his thoughts along the way • How a heartfelt letter sent after their first meeting helped establish trust and connection • What it was like for Kami to attend a large family reunion and meet relatives she never expected to know If this episode resonates with you, be sure to explore other episodes of DNA Clarity and Support featuring people searching for biological relatives, late-discovery biological parents, and families navigating unexpected DNA discoveries.
