   Doctor Zhivago, Epilogue

Welcome to week 16 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. The epilogue of our slow read through Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago — a short chapter, about twelve pages, and there turns out to be rather a lot in it. It's 1943. Misha Gordon and Nicky Dudorov are officers now, fourteen years after Yury's death, sheltering overnight in a barn in the ruins of Chern. Over a quiet conversation at sunrise they work through everything that has happened to them since: Dudorov's fiancée Christina, who slipped behind German lines, blew up a stronghold and was hanged for it — and has now been canonised by the Church; the camps; the penal battalion where survival was the price of freedom; and the Yezhov terror, and why a failure that couldn't be admitted had to be buried under something worse. Then there's Tanya, the regimental laundry girl, and the resemblance Gordon can't stop noticing. In this episode I look at Gordon's line about how a thing conceived in a lofty, ideal manner turns coarse and material — Rome out of Greece, the Revolution out of the Russian Enlightenment — and at the closing scene in Moscow, five or ten years later, where the two men leaf through a book of Yury's writings and feel something like happiness. If it's ten, we're in 1953, the year Stalin died. And I get into the irony that Pasternak himself came off worse under Khrushchev than he ever did under Stalin. One last thing: although this is the epilogue, it isn't quite the end. The book Gordon and Dudorov are holding is the novel's final chapter. 📖 Read the essay on Substack: camscampbellreads.substack.com (http://camscampbellreads.substack.com) Doctor Zhivago | Boris Pasternak | Russian Literature | Russian History | Great Terror | Second World War | Slow Read | Book Club A printable version of this essay, plus the audio podcast, is available at camscampbellreads.substack.com (http://camscampbellreads.substack.com) — free to download and read at your leisure. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-16 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-16) Sources: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle over a Forbidden Book (https://geni.us/LREW6), Peter Finn, Petra Couvée A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH), Orlando Figes It's also available as a YouTube video here (https://youtu.be/QxD11kH-uZk). Doctor Zhivago, Conclusion

Welcome to week 15 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Chapter 15 of our slow read through Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago — the Conclusion. Buckle in.Yury drags himself back to Moscow at the start of the NEP, and Pasternak doesn't waste time with coincidence: the first person he runs into is Vassya Brykin, the boy from the train to the Urals, now orphaned in his burned-out home village. In Moscow, Yury moves into the old Sventitsky flat — the one where Lara shot Komarovsky — falls in with the yard porter Markel's daughter Marina, and starts a second family. A chance meeting with his half-brother Yevgraf turns things around: a job, money, and a burst of creative energy that has Yury pouring poetry and prose onto the page faster than he can write it down. Then it ends the way you know it has to. A hot, airless tram, a shape from his past walking past unaware, and Yury's heart finally gives out — closing the circle Pasternak opened with his mother's funeral on page one. Lara appears at the coffin by coincidence, again, and calls it "preordained." I also get into the two English translations here — Hayward/Harari versus Pevear/Volokhonsky — and a Markel pun that may or may not be a Freemason joke.I look at what all this cost Pasternak personally: the NEP itself, Yury's late turn toward prose over poetry, and how closely Lara's farewell to Yury mirrors something that actually happened at Pasternak's own deathbed. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 14

Welcome to week 14 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Yury and Lara flee to the freezing old house at Varykino for a few last stolen days together — days of writing by moonlight, wolves howling beyond the trees, and a love both of them know is running out of time. Then Komarovsky arrives with an offer, a lie and a train ticket east. This is one of the great chapters of the novel: the Varykino idyll, Yury's night-time poetry sessions and Pasternak's own account of where poems come from, the wolves that grow into a dragon, Lara's departure, and the astonishing final movement in which Strelnikov walks out of the darkness for one long night of confession. It ends with one of the most quietly devastating images in the book. Along the way I dig into the real history behind Komarovsky's escape plan — the short-lived Far Eastern Republic (1920–22) and what "safety" out east actually meant — plus Pasternak's double life between his wife Zinaida and Olga Ivinskaya, drawn from Anna Pasternak's Lara, and why translation was both Pasternak's livelihood and the thing keeping him from his novel. There's also a small detour into carrots, cabbages and what жизнь растительного царства should really mean in English, a comparison that took me all the way to The Bridges of Madison County and a book recommendation: Svetlana Alexievich's Secondhand Time. A printable version of this essay, plus the audio podcast, is available at camscampbellreads.substack.com (http://camscampbellreads.substack.com) — free to download and read at your leisure. Only the conclusion and epilogue remain. What do you make of Yury letting Lara go? Let me know in the comments — and if you're enjoying the slow read, a like and subscribe genuinely helps. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 13

Welcome to week 13 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Yury Zhivago finally makes it back to Yuryatin — ragged, half-starved and presumed dead — to the flat opposite the house of the caryatids. What he finds waiting there sets in motion the great love affair at the centre of Pasternak's novel. In this episode of the slow read we cover the chapter titled "Opposite the House of the Caryatids" in the Hayward and Harari translation (it's "Opposite the House with Figures" in the Pevear and Volokhonsky). We follow Yury's return and Lara's letter, his weeks of fever and his recovery under Lara's care, the long shadow Komarovsky still casts over her, the hunted figure of Strelnikov, the Gajda rising, Sima Tuntseva's meditation on the Gospels, and the heartbreaking farewell letter from Tonya. Along the way we look at the real-life parallels between Yury and Lara and Boris Pasternak's own affair with Olga Ivinskaya — drawn from Anna Pasternak's book Lara — and get into the questions the novel keeps circling: romance versus duty, and duty at what cost. A printable version of this essay, plus the audio podcast, is available at camscampbellreads.substack.com (http://camscampbellreads.substack.com) — free to download and read at your leisure. What do you think happens now that Yury knows he has a daughter he may never meet? Let me know in the comments. If you're enjoying the slow read, a like and subscribe helps more than you'd think. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 12

Welcome to week twelve of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Welcome back to the Doctor Zhivago Slow Read. This week we're into Part 12 — the partisans, the taiga, and one of the bleakest and strangest stretches of the whole novel. The partisans' families arrive (the cattle-healer and self-proclaimed witch Kubarikha among them), last week's conspirators meet their end by the ravine, and the brotherhood finds itself besieged in the deep Siberian forest: rationing supplies, stitching coats from dogskin, and slowly coming apart. We get Pamphil's heartbreaking unravelling, Kubarikha's pagan spell over a sick cow, that gorgeous passage on the Russian folk-song as "water in a weir," and finally Yury seizing his chance to slip away into the snow.Along the way, a short detour through French and Russian history — the Communards, the Bourbons, and Ivan the Terrible's oprichniki — plus a note from Orlando Figes on just how meagre Allied aid to the Whites really was. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-12 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-12) Sources: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle over a Forbidden Book (https://geni.us/LREW6), Peter Finn, Petra Couvée A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH), Orlando Figes It's also available as a YouTube video here (https://youtu.be/gGys9HqC1nw). Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 11

Welcome to week eleven of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. After a chapter away from the main cast, we're back with Yury — now a captive medic of the Forest Brotherhood partisans, almost two years into a captivity he keeps trying and failing to escape. This is the chapter where Pasternak puts a doctor who has sworn to do no harm into a firefight, and asks what a conscience does when events stop leaving it a choice. A reader's diary written in Ukraine on the first morning of the 2022 invasion gives us the frame: "People only do that which they can't not do." From there: two enemy soldiers carrying the same psalm to opposite ends, Yury's argument with Liberius about whether any theory can contain life, and Pamphil Palykh — a man who has killed without flinching, undone by the one death that follows him home. Where do you think it's heading — does Yury get away from Liberius? Let me know in the comments, and I'll see you in the next one. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-11 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-9) Sources: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle over a Forbidden Book (https://geni.us/LREW6), Peter Finn, Petra Couvée A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH), Orlando Figes Ukraine 22: Ukrainian Writers Respond to War (https://geni.us/vzs0BB), Ed. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 10

Welcome to week ten of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Chapter 10 is the strangest turn in the novel so far: Pasternak mislays his own protagonist. With Yury carried off by the Forest Brotherhood, the lens pulls back to take in the whole of Kolchak's Siberia — a grocer's wife fainting at Matins, frightened boys toasting a victory they don't believe in, a handful of ageing revolutionaries bickering in a photographer's shed. Zhivago himself survives only as a rumour: a famous doctor from Moscow, heard of but never seen. In this instalment I work through the chapter section by section — the history behind Admiral Kolchak and the Whites, the Holy Week framing and the thaw, Galuzina's grief and her uneasy nostalgia, and the secret meeting where an old face from the train to the Urals resurfaces in a new political guise. As always, I compare the Hayward–Harari and Pevear–Volokhonsky translations against Pasternak's Russian, and stop on the lines where the choices really matter. Whether you're reading along, returning to the novel, or meeting it for the first time, I hope this helps the chapter open up. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-10 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-9) Sources: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle over a Forbidden Book (https://geni.us/LREW6), Peter Finn, Petra Couvée A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH), Orlando Figes It's also available as a YouTube video here (https://youtu.be/gGys9HqC1nw). Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 9

Welcome to week nine of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. This one's a favourite — much of it is written as Yury's diary, so we're deep inside his head as he works the land at Varykino, muses on art and Russian literature (Pushkin, Chekhov, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky), and senses spring coming. Then the chapter turns: a chance sighting in the Yuryatin library brings Lara back into his life, an affair begins, and Pasternak's own tangled life starts bleeding into the fiction. It ends with Yury stopped at a crossroads by three horsemen — and everything about to change.I also get into the biography here: the guilt, Zinaida and Olga, and how hard it becomes to tell Pasternak and Zhivago apart. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-9 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-9) Sources this week: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak. Welcome to week eight of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. In this eighth instalment of our sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago, the Zhivago family arrives in the Urals — a world apart from Moscow. We meet a cast of memorable new characters, including the lawyer Samdevyatov and the Mikulitsins, and follow the family's tense first encounter at Varykino. Along the way, we explore Gasparov's idea of temporal counterpoint, Pasternak's own writing habits and love of a tidy study, the history of the Constituent Assembly, and the shadowy figure of Commissar Strelnikov — whose reputation continues to precede him. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-8 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-8) Sources this week: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 7

Welcome to week seven of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. This is a long chapter—some 40 pages—covering a huge amount of ground, both literally and figuratively. The Zhivagos leave Moscow for Varykino in the Urals, travelling through a country in chaos: armed patrols, conscript wagons, blizzards, escaped prisoners, and the slow revelation that the Civil War is closing in around them. Along the way, we meet the mysterious Strelnikov — revolutionary commander, pride and terror of the region — and Pasternak drops just enough clues for the careful reader to work out who he really is. I also look at the Pugachev rebellion and its echoes in Russian literature, Pasternak's use of Petersburg rather than Petrograd, the Trotsky parallel, and what Italo Calvino made of Pasternak's relationship to the Revolution. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-7 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-7) Sources this week: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 6

Welcome to week six of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Yury returns to Moscow after two years at the front to find a city — and a country — transformed. The February Revolution has happened, and possibly the July Days too. His friends are dimmer than he remembered, his son doesn't know him, and the October Revolution is about to land on his doorstep. In this episode I look at the dual-power struggle between the Provisional Government and the Soviets, the rise and fall of the Socialist Revolutionaries, and why a throwaway quip from the servant Markel turns out to be historically interesting. I also look at what Mayakovsky's relationship with the Revolution tells us about Pasternak's, and what it cost Pasternak personally to grit his teeth and stay in Russia while his family got out. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-6 (https://camscampbellreads.substack.com/p/doctor-zhivago-chapter-6) Sources this week: (https://youtu.be/WxBccycJOWY) A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH), Orlando Figes (The Bodley Head, 2017) Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago (https://geni.us/AFjI), Anna Pasternak. Doctor Zhivago, Chapter 5

Welcome to week five of our sixteen-week guided slow read of Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago. This week we cover Chapter 5, set in the chaotic summer of 1917 — the turbulent months between the February and October Revolutions. Yury, Lara and Galiullin find themselves in the fictional town of Melyuzeyevo, navigating local administration, paperwork, stolen conversations and the breakdown of order all around them. We witness the tragic fate of the idealistic young Commissar Gintz, explore what Orlando Figes has to say about the collapse of authority in 1917, and discuss the moving final conversation between Yury and Lara before they part — perhaps forever. 📖 Follow along with the essay and printable version at camscampbellreads.substack.com (http://camscampbellreads.substack.com)Sources this week:Orlando Figes, A People's Tragedy (https://geni.us/tCBGZH) (The Bodley Head, 2017) - Edith W.
