Someone Has to Drive - Graeme Reavley on Taking Aid to Ukraine
This week I got to meet and chat with Graeme Reavley, a retired vet from Northumberland. Russia’s war against Ukraine began with the invasion of Crimea in 2014, escalating into a full scale invasion in February 2022. Since then, Graeme has made repeated journeys across Europe, driving donated vehicles and delivering supplies to people affected by the war.
What began as a single trip has become a long-term commitment, supported by volunteers and donations from communities across the Scottish Borders and North East England.
I wanted to find out what makes someone keep going back, what he’s witnessed along the way and what those journeys have taught him about the people living through this war.

A Wandering Existence
This audio first appeared on my weekly newsletter here: https://documentally.substack.com/p/a-wandering-existence-2160 (https://documentally.substack.com/p/a-wandering-existence-2160)
While walking the dog I spotted a man coming along the road pulling a four-wheeled cart loaded with what looked like everything he owned.
Obviously, I had to stop and find out what was going on.
His name is Adam Richards and he was just about to cross the border from Scotland back into England, part way through a 2,433-mile walk that started in Manchester.
So far his journey has taken him through the Lake District, along the Scottish coast, through Ayr, Paisley, Stirling and Edinburgh.
Adam says he’s doing it for his kids. He wants to show them that money needn't be your main focus in life. Sometimes it’s enough to decide to do something, to follow your dreams, believe in yourself and just go.
He describes himself as technically houseless rather than homeless. While living on about £400 a month and documenting the journey online, everything he needs is in the cart he pulls behind him.
After our paths crossed, I ran home, grabbed a mic shield and caught up with him before he crossed the border.
This podcast is our conversation.
Adam can be found online in various places as @Rant_N_Roam
Thanks for listening.

A year later Spotify would find it's feet in the US and everything changed.
