Scary Movie (2026) with horror director Dale Craven & Hugh McStay
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by Not This One, because Latham didn't bother getting a sponsor this week. Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, following coverage of the original Scary Movie, they return to examine the new Wayans brothers-led 2026 'rebootquel'. Joined again by horror director Dale Craven (the reports of whose death are greatly exaggerated) and Modern Horror (that's 'Modern Horror') co-host Hugh McStay, they look at how this influential horror parody works in a modern 2020s lens; whether the Wayans successfully manage to lampoon the trend for nostalgia and legacy stars and characters; and whether the rapid fire jokes in any way land. Will it measure up to the Scary Movie legacy? Will the ShirleyVerse's own Ghostface return? And just who lies behind the mask? Find out! Host / Editor A. J. Casino Royale (1967) with spy memorabilia collector Derek Norman and Guy Walker
In this episode, Tony chooses one of the most unusual spoofs in cinema history, the 1967 'adaptation' of Ian Fleming's Casino Royale. Joined by spy memorabilia collector Derek Norman (you know, from YouTube) and Britcom Goes to the Movies co-host Guy Walker, they chat this deeply strange take on the legend of James Bond, with numerous actors playing the role, psychedlic 60s vignettes, five directors, what feels like five different plots, and off screen shenanigans far more interesting than anything in the film itself. But is this an underrated curio? How exactly does it take off 007? And will we be left shaken and stirred (or maybe just undercooked)? Find out! Host / Editor A. J. Scary Movie (2000) with horror director Dale Craven & Dev Elson
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, (not very) proudly sponsored this time by Matt Snaps, which definitely didn't fall off the back of a Nestle lorry. Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, Tony chooses perhaps the most famous parody movie of the Noughties, Scary Movie. Joined by up and coming horror director Dale Craven and one of his biggest fans, podcaster Dev Elson, they discuss the arbitration genesis of this horror spoof that launched an entire franchise (set to soon return for a sixth outing); tackle the cast and jokes that may or may not have aged well; and wonder whether this film killed or saved the parody film. Do you like Scary Movie? Do you like scary movies? Do you wish I would stop asking questions? Find out! Host / Editor A. J. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) with Mary-Anne Megalopowitz & Verbal Diorama
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by Delusion Labs, where high-fashion luxury meets absolute chaos. Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, Matt chooses and picks as much a satire as parody in caustic 1999 beauty pageant comedy, Drop Dead Gorgeous. Joined by beauty pageant expert and former winner Mary-Anne Megalopowitz (Ed: I know, an actual guest who shows up!), they discuss the lineage of this kind of comedy, the targets it takes aim at, just how savage the comedy is and whether it would hold up in the modern age, and much more. Will it pass the Latham laugh test? Does it pass the Bechdel test? Did you pass your driving test? Find out! Host / Editor Matt Latham Co-Host A. J. National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 (1993) with Jack Magnum
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by Covfefe Pictures, releasing exciting action sequel Freedom Overdrive II: Hell on the Hormuz everywhere! Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, the premiere of Season 2, they look at a personal favourite (of Tony's), the 1993 action movie spoof, National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1. Taking aim at especially Lethal Weapon at the height of the high concept blockbuster, Gene Quintano's film fires out gags at the rapid fire pace of a machine gun, but do they all land? Are the films it satirises still well known enough in popular culture to resonate? And will Scotty get the coffee machine working? Find out! Host / Editor A. J. An American Carol aka Big Fat Important Movie (2008) with Ronald Rump
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by Scrooge Financial Services, where the more you put in, the less you get! Ho-ho-hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, the finale of Season 1, they stray into a combination of Christmas and political waters with David Zucker's 2008 'comedy', An American Carol aka Big Fat Important Movie. A lampoon of American politics at the tail end of the Bush Administration and the War on Terror, the film takes potshots at liberal democracy, Michael Moore and a whole lot more. But is it funny? (Ed - no) Does it stand the test of time? (Ed - no!) And will Tony stop hijacking the show notes to advance his left-leaning liberal agenda? (Ed - this is Latham, and I'm sorry, but no) Find out! Fatal Instinct (1993) with Dr. Marilyn Gusset & Rob Heath
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by Vigoronex, because sometimes love needs a little... "what did I just swallow?" Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, joined by Britcom Goes to the Movies co-host Rob Heath, they look at 1993's pastiche of the 80s and 90s erotic thriller, Fatal Instinct. Directed by comedy legend Carl Reiner, this takes aim at such famous potboilers as Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, but does it stoke the same fires? How well does it capture the overly serious sexiness of these titillating tales? And will Tony make a pass at Latham? Find out! Host / Editor Matt Latham Co-Host A. J. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) with DJ Professor Plonka
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, proudly sponsored this time by ParoAds, because some things are just too good not to make fun of - including us! Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, they look at 2022's unorthodox parody biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Charting the unusual life story of legendary singer/songwriter comedian 'Weird' Al Yankovic, the film sees Daniel Radcliffe step into the shoes of an irreverent American icon. But how does this tale intersect with the musical biopic? Is it a parody or a parody of a parody? And will our heads stop hurting after typing that sentence? Find out! Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, they look at the 1948 Universal Monsters pastiche, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. One of the earliest spoofs to become a sizeable hit, it features two American comics at the height of their fame taking off the first true Hollywood genre franchise. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, they look at the 1998 gangster film spoof, Jane Austen's Mafia. Team America: World Police (2003) with U.S. politician Ben Brownstone
Welcome to DON'T CALL US SHIRLEY! A PARODY MOVIE PODCAST, and don't miss new film Freedom Overdrive: Lock and Liberate starring Jack Magnum, only in cinemas July 4! Hosted by A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way. In this episode, they look at the 2003 political puppet satire, Team America: World Police. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's polemic against the War on Terror stands as a striking deconstruction of America's reaction to 9/11, but does it resonate twenty years on? Is the humour as potent? Does it reflect our world now? And does everyone really have AIDS? Find out! Host / Editor Matt Latham Co-Host A. J. Black and Matt Latham, Don't Call Us Shirley! explores the breadth of cinematic parody and pastiche across the decades, tackling the great, good and obscure along the way.
