Last episode thank you so much for listening!
With the aim of again underlying why we should all be doing our utmost to stop a human-originated apocalypse, let’s look at things you may not have considered.
Hopefully, you have a humming little society starting out, but there are some things you’re going to miss more than others, and they might surprise you.

Don't Eat Me 16: Homes and Villages
Villages appeared, in the nomadic eras, where people crossed paths, or gathered to share resources. Where people stopped and cooked food, usually near water, discarded seeds will have germinated into useful edible plants, so when they returned, there would be food to collect.
People started to work out the benefits of collective effort.

Don't Eat Me 15: Survival Skills
The more you know about First Aid, the better. Get some training: it’s good for a pre-apocalyptic society, too. And some tramping/hiking experience will help you too – there's food everywhere, if you know what to look for.

Don't Eat Me 14: Moving On
It wasn’t all that long ago that some Westerners were still living a fairly hand-to-mouth lifestyle intimately connected to the land and seasons. We don't any more – so why on earth would we want to change that?

Don't Eat Me 13: Survive
Before we move on, let’s have a recap. I listed a bewildering, if not terrifying, long list of historic reasons we hold a special place in our nightmares for apocalypse.
To get this far, humans have survived countless terrible calamities – my list was far from exhaustive, but it was quite representative. For the last few hundred years, these calamities can increasingly be laid with us: Homo Stupensis (maybe I should trademark that name).
But on the positive side, we did get this far.

Don't Eat Me 12: Fats are the problem
Unfortunately, there’s a reason that the survivalist narrative often goes to cannibalism: we need fat, and in a crisis, fat is often the thing that evades the gatherer the soonest.

Don't Eat Me 11: Calories Per Day
Food humans need daily, calorie-wise, is widely variable. As should our food be.

Don't Eat Me 10: Kitchen Mixer
We take food for granted, but how much do we really need and from where might we get it?

Don't Eat Me 9: food for granted
We take food so much for granted, (at least in most of the so-called ‘Western’ countries) we have, most of us, lost connection with how it’s produced. Homo Sapiens wandered in search of food for c298,000 years – for the last 2000 or so, we've learnt not to.

Don't Eat Me 8: water
Water: it's so much more than 'just' a drink. It keeps us clean, carries away waste and keeps our plants growing. And then there's gas, communications, e-pulses, fire, supplies

Don't Eat Me 7: Collapse
Say you wake up one morning, and 40% of people no longer exist. That’s ‘the honeymoon vision of apocalypse’, as ridiculous as that phrase sounds. Mass graves, electricity, nuclear energy, and it's everywhere, but soon might not be: water

Don't Eat Me 6: Contagion, Zombies, obscenely rich & matter
Contagion is a shape-shifting threat, why I rule out Zombies, what the rich could do, and matter for that matter. And what about microplastics?

Don't Eat Me 5
Try as we might to make the planet less hospitable for ourselves, Earth has an arms cache of its own: earthquakes, volcanos, tsunamis, and then there's our war obsession and overpopulation.

Natural disasters: Earth is our home – and our furnace
Earth is a tiny globe in a vast and inhospitable space. For a sense of scale, even our Moon is so far away from Earth – I know we perceive it as ‘close’ – that every other planet in the Solar System can fit between Earth and the Moon, including Saturn and Jupiter, both of which are dramatically bigger than Earth. That Earth supports life at all is both miraculous and precarious.

Don't Eat Me 3
Human devastations often follow each other. War leads to impacts that make people susceptible to other conditions as people suffer dislocation, cold and starvation.
World War One was followed immediately by the devastating flu epidemic, then the Great Depression, then World War Two. Over three decades of (mostly human-created) awfulness.

Don't Eat Me 1: Apocalypse
An apocalypse is a “very serious event resulting in great destruction and change” (Cambridge Dictionary). Biblically: an imminent cosmic cataclysm in which God destroyed the ruling powers of evil.
