In DÖRTHY TALK, presenter, writer and director Dörthe Eickelberg (CHICKS ON BOARDS, XENIUS, DIE NÄCHSTE WELLE IST FÜR DICH) dives head first into deep talks with surfers who have something to say. Topics are as vast as the ocean, the perspective is female. Based in Berlin and hence landlocked, Dörthe records her talks on her surftrips. The conversations are correspondingly diverse and multilingual. So don't be surprised if an episode in German or French follows an episode in English. DÖRTHY TALK is released every other Thursday, with more infos on IG @doerthe_eickelberg

Jamie Brisick, writer of BECOMING WESTERLY and director of THE LIFE AND DEATH OF WESTERLY MENDINA, is a surf intellectual and a pleasure to talk to. While sitting in my campervan in Southern France, he told me about his wild past as a pro surfer and the losses he had to experience in life. We discuss how surfing, culture and the combination of both is evolving and how riding waves can help you to overcome trauma.
Sit with us in the campervan and listen to this uncut deep talk with a non-alcoholic beer in the hand and the rain pouring against the windows.

08_EN: Lucy Small, surf filmmaker and activist
Once upon a time, Lucy Small won a longboard competition in Australia. Her prize money, however, was only a fraction of what her male counterparts received. She voiced her displeasure at the awards ceremony. And so began the story of a surfer who became a filmmaker. Even though her name might suggest otherwise, Lucy Small’s story is no fairy tale, and even today, women are fighting for greater equality both in the water and on land.

06_EN : Joaquín Azulay, Gauchos del Mar in Antarctica
I promised you the sequel, and here it is: Half a year after our chat in London, I am meeting one of the gauchos del mar again to talk about their latest mission: A sailing trip to Antarctica. What challenges did they face, what is it like to ride a wave in the coldest and harshest part of the earth, what motivates them to make films over films, and why do we need to care about krill?

05_EN : Joaquín Azulay, Gauchos del Mar
The Argentinian brothers Joaquín and Julian Azulay have found waves that have never been surfed and explored places that most of us don't know. Over two years, they crossed the African continent in an Unimog and brought back a film with a message. In this podcast I am talking to Julian in London, right before the premiere of their latest film: Antarctica.
To be continued.

04_DE : Cira Riedel und der Elefant im Raum über Nachhaltigkeit im Outdoorsport
(English below)

Cira Riedel, founder of Greenroom Voice, advises outdoor brands on sustainability issues and also hosts a podcast on this matter. So I can talk to her about the elephant in the room that’s always there on our surf trips: The contradiction between the appeal of surfing and the reality of the industry. Even if we are just enjoying a nature-based sport for ourselves, we can hardly avoid leaving a footprint—from the gear we use to the transportation we choose. How do we deal with this dilemma? Cira has a few surprisingly pragmatic tips.

03_EN : Lee-Ann Curren, pro surfer and musician
Lee-Ann Curren is a European surf champion, a French-American musician and so much more...
While sitting in my campervan on a busy street in Biarritz, Lee-Ann told me a bit about the chance and burden of being born in a family of surf legends, what it is like to be openly gay as a pro surfer and how surfing can become part of the performing arts.
In order to reach a broader audience, we recorded this podcast in English - which felt funny, because we normally speak French when we meet. She was part of my arte documentary CHICKS ON BOARDS, together with her aunt Christine.
Lee-Ann spoke softly and thoughtfully, which may have had something to do with the change in language, but also with the calmness and modesty she exudes.
I am sure we'll meet again for another podcast recording, la prochaine fois in French!

02_EN : Demi Taylor, London Surffilmfestival
Together with her partner Chris, surfer and filmmaker Demi brought the LONDON SURF/FILMFESTIVAL to live. When they go surfing in the cold waters of Cornwall, they put on natural rubber - because neoprene is the villain of the surf industry, as we learn in their documentary THE BIG SEA. In this podcast, I am meeting Demi in the green room of the riverside studios where their festival takes place - and where I just received a prize for my short film GOOD MORNING GAZA.

Dörthy Talk : Trailer
Following CHICKS ON BOARDS and THE NEXT WAVE IS YOURS, Berlin based director, host, and author Dörthe Eickelberg returns to her greatest passion—surfing—in DÖRTHY TALK. On her road trips, Dörthe meets female surfers who have something to say. But of course, male surfers get a chance to speak as well. Feminism only works together! From spot checks to ocean conservation, from localism to inclusion: the conversations don’t just ripple by, but go deep.
DÖRTHY TALK is a multilingual podcast about surfing, culture, science and community. Episodes are released in English and German, with occasional conversations in other languages. Because surfing is a global movement - the waves know no boarders.
