Photo by Rudolf-Peter Bakker on Unsplash The killings continue. Servants are still sent to the vineyard. And these servants still cry out against the violent and unjust caretakers. Servants still proclaim that God isn’t okay with how people in power continue to look out for their own interests ahead of the vineyard's well-being. Because here’s the thing: people are still being neglected in the vineyard at the hands of those in charge, those who’ve been entrusted to protect the vulnerable and the powerless, to care for the widow and the orphan, to welcome the stranger, to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted, and to make certain that no one exploits or harms those who’re constantly the targets of the wicked: children, the elderly, the impoverished, the sick, and those on the margins. But, according to the story, the owner’s unwilling to let the vineyard go, unwilling to ignore the distress of ordinary people. Subscribe to us on iTunes! Equality the Way God Sees It (Matthew 20:1-16)
Image by Gonzalo Acuña But who said anything about deserving? In the reign of God, we’re valuable not based on our production, not based on how much we’re worth, not based on how many hours we’ve put in out in the fields. We’re valuable because, by the grace of God… God says we’re valuable. People who work for two hours and people who work all day. Impoverished people. The uninsured. Immigrants. LGBTQ+ people. People not born in this country. People who’ll die without adequate healthcare coverage. White middle-class iPhone Duo owners. God says we all have equal value. Consequently, spending our lives identifying our worth by any other measure is not only pointless, but it’s a distraction, verging on sinfulness—because we ceaselessly grasp at something we don’t have, thinking that possessing it will finally make our lives worthwhile… when God has already said our lives are valuable, based on nothing more than the love God used in creating them. Calculating Forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-35)
So, here’s the thing: If the shepherd and the king are meant to represent God in these parables, then we’re left with two choices: either God doesn’t quite get how the world operates and gets swindled by forgiving an ungrateful jerk, or God’s playing a completely different game from the one we’re used to playing. I’m going with the latter. Whatever God’s role in all of this forgiveness stuff is, it’s way bigger, and way more absurd than you or I are liable to dream up on our own. But that, at least in part, is Jesus’ point: When it comes to forgiveness, we tend not to think big enough. We’re stuck on questions like: How often, and under what specific conditions, am I required to forgive? Subscribe to us on iTunes!
