Episode 15 - Breaking the Silence: Birth Trauma, Advocacy and Systemic Injustice ~ Sharon Stoliar

Welcome to the Doulas Uncensored Podcast! Join hosts Sammy Griffin and Moran Liviani as they embark on this journey of exploration, education, and empowerment. In this episode, Sammy and Moran talk to Sharon Stoliar. Sharon Stoliar is a highly experienced midwife, researcher, and advocate dedicated to exposing the failures within maternity care. As the president of the Maternity Consumer Network in Australia, she played a key role in the recent Birth Trauma Inquiry, working to highlight the mistreatment and systemic failures that many women experience in the healthcare system. She is also the author of Scars of Gold, a powerful memoir detailing her personal experience with birth trauma and her journey into advocacy. But Sharon’s advocacy goes beyond birth—she was one of the few voices to call out systemic antisemitism within the healthcare system, raising the alarm about discrimination faced by Jewish healthcare workers and patients. Instead of being heard, she was cancelled by the birth world and ignored and penalised by the regulating body, AHPRA. This episode is controversial for good reason. We’re diving into birth trauma, the fight for maternity reform, and the hidden biases—including antisemitism—that are often swept under the rug in healthcare. Buckle up—this is a conversation that challenges the status quo. Sharon's book recommendation are: Gifted Hands by Dr Ben Carson And one of the most famous books of all time; The Bible and references her inspirations being two powerful women in the bible being Ruth & Esther. You can find Sharon on Instagram as well as on her blog and through the Maternity Consumer Network. Episode 9 - Commemorate October 7th ~ #Metoo Unless Your An Israeli Woman

Welcome to the Doulas Uncensored Podcast! Join hosts Sammy Griffin and Moran Liviani as they embark on this journey of exploration, education, and empowerment. In this deeply personal solo episode, I commemorate the tragic events of October 7th and reflect on a year since the attacks. I confront the unsettling silence around the suffering of Israeli women in the aftermath of that day. As a mother, a Jewish woman, and an Israeli, I feel an urgent need to speak out against the failure of the feminist movement and #MeToo advocates to address this painful reality. As a birth doula, it has been especially heartbreaking to see fellow birth workers remain silent about the atrocities faced by Israeli women, as though saying, "Me Too—unless you’re Israeli." In this episode, I also share my family’s personal journey, the emotional weight we’ve carried, and the isolation of being far from Israel. With the lessons passed down from my Holocaust survivor grandparents, I remind us that silence in the face of injustice only lets it fester. Today, I break that silence and choose to speak up. So, sit back, relax, and let's uncover the untold stories, insights, and wisdom together on Doulas Uncensored. She has a background in psychology, midwifery, and neuro-developmental delay, combined with a personal and family history of learning difficulties, making her uniquely qualified to help children with neuro-developmental delays. Emily first became interested in NDD therapy after witnessing its positive impact on her cousin. Emily graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. During her studies, she spent a month in Colorado interning under an NDD therapist at Anna’s House. During this internship, she learned about the significant impact that pregnancy and birth have on normal brain development. It was not until later that I realized labor and birth also have a huge impact on brain development,” she notes. In her senior year at UCO, Emily completed the necessary classes to become a childbirth doula. After college, she decided to further her education in midwifery. She was accepted into the Midwife’s Assistant Program at the Oklahoma Midwives Alliance and began a clinical apprenticeship at Community Midwifery Services. Emily’s expertise in neuro-development and midwifery provides her with a unique perspective on birth and its significance in childhood development. In this episode, Emily discusses integrated reflexes and their ongoing effects on childhood development, particularly when children miss out on these reflexes due to birth interventions or modes of delivery. She also shares how women can support themselves and their babies during pregnancy through movement. Episode 4 - The Practicalities & Politics of Breastfeeding ~ Amberley Harris

Welcome to the Doulas Uncensored Podcast! Join hosts Sammy Griffin and Moran Liviani as they embark on this journey of exploration, education, and empowerment. In this episode, we delve into the topic of breastfeeding and the unethical rise of formula marketing. Our guest, Amberley Harris, is a Melbourne-based Registered Midwife (Endorsed) in private practice, running her own breastfeeding consultancy business. With over 12 years of experience working as a Midwife in both public and private hospital settings, Amberley is also a proud co-producer of two small humans. With a highly engaged audience of over 20k followers on social media, Amberley is a micro-influencer in the world of motherhood and maternal wellness. She transitioned to entrepreneurship for two reasons: to make significant, impactful changes to global breastfeeding statistics and to incorporate philanthropy into her journey. Over the past four years, Amberley has been filming a breastfeeding documentary, which has taken her to many different countries for research. This global perspective gives her a unique insight into what is working well internationally and why Australian breastfeeding rates haven't risen since the 90s, despite ample evidence of breastfeeding benefits. In this episode, we discuss the fact that the global infant and toddler food market is projected to reach $120 billion US by 2030. Between 2010 and 2020, global sales in the infant and toddler feeding sector grew from $33.2 billion US to $67.9 billion US, with infant formula historically representing the majority of this. However, toddler formula has now taken over the higher percentage of these sales. The advertisements of toddler formula seem to have changed the landscape of how formula companies are able to get their brands into households. You can find Amberley on Instagram at Amberley_harris_ or at www.maternal-instincts.com.au/. You can also join the 662 Movement at https://join.maternal-instincts.com.au/662-membership/ (https://join.maternal-instincts.com.au/662-membership/).
