About Down To Flock: A Podcast About Birds and Birding
Down to Flock is a podcast for bird lovers, curious minds, and anyone who's ever looked up and wondered, "What bird is that?"
Three days a week, join us for Bird of the Day, where we spotlight a different bird and explore its fascinating behaviors, unique adaptations, calls, habitat, and surprising facts. Down to Flock aims to become a welcoming community for everyone who appreciates birds—whether you're a lifelong birder or just getting started.
So grab your binoculars, keep your ears open, and let's get Down to Flock.
They are small, bold, and instantly recognizable with their black caps and cheerful chick-a-dee-dee-dee calls. This week on Down to Flock, we’re hanging out with the fearless, high-energy acrobat of the woods: the Chickadee.
Don't let their tiny size fool you—these little birds possess some of the most extraordinary brains in the animal kingdom. Join us as we explore how their hippocampus actually expands every autumn to help them remember thousands of individual seed hiding spots, break down the complex language encoded inside their famous call, and reveal how they survive freezing winter nights by voluntarily lowering their own body temperature. Get ready to celebrate the boldest pint-sized bird at your feeder!

Bird of the Day: Green Jay
If you thought jays only came in blue, think again. Wearing a dazzling combination of tropical green, cobalt blue, yellow, and a deep black throat patch, the Green Jay looks more like an exotic parrot than a North American corvid. This week on Down to Flock, we’re traveling down to the thickets of southern Texas and Central America to meet this stunning, noisy character.
Like their Blue Jay cousins, Green Jays pack serious intelligence and social drama into a colorful package. Join us as we explore how these bird-world geniuses use twigs as tools to extract food, maintain tight-knit family flocks that help raise the next generation, and command the mesquite brush with their harsh, raspy alarm calls. Pack your bags—we’re heading south for a front-row look at one of the most vibrant birds in the wild!
