Your red face after one drink is not embarrassing. It's your body sounding a biological alarm.
Key Takeaways:
- Asian flush is caused by a genetic ALDH2 enzyme deficiency - not alcohol sensitivity
- Without this enzyme, acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen) accumulates rapidly in the body
- Symptoms include facial redness, racing heart, and nausea after even small amounts of alcohol
- The flush is a warning signal - not a cosmetic inconvenience
I'm Dr. Kiat, let's keep going heart to heart.

✅ How to Choose a Safe Supplement: A Cardiologist's Evidence-Based Checklist | Dr Kiat
A major supplement scandal has just gone viral in China, attracting over 130 million views on Weibo - and my inbox has been flooded with the same question ever since: are Australian supplements still safe to take?
The story centres on a top-selling supplement brand marketed as a premium Australian import, exposed by state broadcaster CCTV as having no legitimate Australian manufacturing presence. Investigators traced its registered Melbourne address to an unrelated auto repair shop. The brand also allegedly lacked required government health approvals, and had purchased international awards to manufacture credibility. A joint investigation by multiple Chinese regulatory bodies has since been launched.
My take: this is not a story about Australian supplements being unsafe - it is a story about fraudulent marketing. And it makes one thing clear: you need to know how to verify what you are buying.
How I choose a trustworthy supplement:
1. Verify the TGA listing (AUST L number) on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) - this is the minimum safety baseline
2. Prioritise products with third-party testing and genuine consumer reviews of that specific product, not just the brand
3. Trust the label, not the marketing - claims that only appear on an e-commerce page and not on the physical label are a red flag
4. Follow the recommended dose on the label - most supplement problems stem from incorrect dosing, not the ingredient itself
5. "Australian owned" does not mean made in Australia - confirm the product is actually sold and available to purchase domestically
Have a supplement you're unsure about? Leave it in the comments - I'll review it.
I'm Dr Kiat - medical scientist and cardiologist. Evidence first, always.
