About Drawing Within
Drawing Within, hosted by artist Eileen Cubbage, positions drawing as a movement language—a practice where body, breath, and gesture generate trace. Each episode begins from the body and follows how line, mark, and surface register presence. Rather than representation, drawing becomes relation: a way of holding time, sensing orientation, and revealing transition. Those drawn to a body-based, process-led approach will find resonance in these conversations with form, gesture, and the unseen.

Drawing as Inquiry
Drawing doesn't begin with conclusions. It begins with questions—gestures that test, probe, search. This episode explores how authority emerges not from certainty, but from the rigor of sustained asking. When marks function as tests rather than declarations, when repetition accumulates evidence, when contradiction remains visible—the work gains conviction through its willingness to stay open. Inquiry is not hesitation. It's method. The drawing that records its own questioning often carries more authority than the one that performs resolution. In this episode: Gesture as hypothesis Iteration as searching Openness as rigor Ways to practice: SHIFT 4-week online immersion (https://www.eileencubbage.com/somatic-drawing-shift) is a live month-long practice following the Drawing Within podcast. Each week pairs an episode with a live session, translating inquiry into embodied mark-making. Keep drawing, Eileen

Making Marks that Endure
In a culture that prizes correction and refinement, drawing offers a counterpoint: authority built from what remains. Making Marks That Endure examines how presence persists not through polish, but through commitment to the uncorrected trace. This episode explores three conditions of endurance. First, the mark as commitment—how a single placed line becomes an irreversible decision that structures everything after. Second, endurance as conviction—how authority emerges not from certainty but from the refusal to retract. Third, irreversibility as compositional strength—how the unalterable mark becomes the real architecture of the work. These aren’t mistakes left visible out of laziness. They are decisions that organize the field. A committed line becomes a condition. A trace that stays becomes an axis. Drawing demonstrates that presence is carried forward through every subsequent act, not asserted once and abandoned. In this episode: Mark as commitment Endurance as conviction Irreversibility as strength Ways to practice: SHIFT 4-week online immersion (https://www.eileencubbage.com/somatic-drawing-shift) is a live month-long practice following the Drawing Within podcast. Each week pairs a podcast episode with a live session, translating inquiry into embodied mark-making. Keep drawing, Eileen

The Art of Changing Mid-Line
Change rarely arrives at the beginning. More often it cuts into what is already underway: a line half-formed, a gesture extended, a rhythm moving across the page. Drawing makes this interruption visible. Instead of erasing, it records each hesitation, bend, and redirection as part of the work. What in other contexts might be concealed becomes continuity here: adaptation preserved openly in trace. This episode turns to the practice of changing mid-line. You’ll encounter interruption not as collapse but as threshold, redirection as a way of carrying origins forward, and resilience as elasticity inscribed into form. To alter course in the middle is not to fail but to persist with honesty. In this episode: – Interruption inside momentum – Redirection as continuity – Elasticity as resilience Ways to practice: The Core Sequence (https://www.eileencubbage.com/about-somatic-drawing) is a live, online 60-minute drawing practice built on body, breath, movement, and mark, and SHIFT (https://www.eileencubbage.com/somatic-drawing-shift) goes even deeper, a 4-week immersion each month. Becoming Through the Page
A drawing is never static. Every mark alters what follows, every gesture inscribes transition. What is often hidden as error—hesitation, revision, erasure—becomes visible record. This episode explores how drawing reframes becoming as evidence, not deficiency. You’ll see how the body registers change before language, how marks form an archive of transition, and how presence is sustained through visible process. To see the page this way is to recognize becoming not as unfinished, but as the clearest form of transformation in motion. In this episode: – Transition is evidence, not error – Embodiment registers before language – Archive of becoming Want more than listening? The Core Sequence (https://www.eileencubbage.com/about-somatic-drawing) is a live, online 60-minute drawing practice built on body, breath, movement, and mark, and SHIFT (https://www.eileencubbage.com/somatic-drawing-shift) goes even deeper, a 4-week immersion.

Drawing Without a Map
We’re taught that starting without a plan is reckless. That if you don’t map it out first, you’ll lose track, waste energy, or fail before you begin. A plan is framed as the only proof of seriousness. But drawing tells a different story. A line doesn’t wait for permission. It moves, bends, interrupts, or redirects—generating its own orientation as it unfolds. What looks like uncertainty is actually process at work: coherence emerging from relation rather than from rules set in advance. On the page, marks themselves become navigation. This week, we turn toward that practice of beginning without prescription. To draw without a map is to stay present, to let orientation surface mark by mark instead of forcing it. Rather than clinging to clarity as something you must have before moving, you discover that direction arises in motion. The invitation is simple: release the plan and let process lead. In this episode: Friction signals the end of prescription Line as navigation Process as discovery, not destination Want more than listening? The Core Sequence (https://www.eileencubbage.com/about-somatic-drawing) is a live, online 60-minute drawing practice built on body, breath, movement, and mark, and SHIFT (https://www.eileencubbage.com/somatic-drawing-shift) goes even deeper, a 4-week immersion. Feeling Without Naming
We’re expected to explain, to put feelings into words. But drawing refuses that pressure. A mark doesn’t wait for language — it arrives on its own terms. On the page, states are carried directly: repetition builds, pressure thickens, a line falters and continues. These aren’t descriptions. They’re evidence. Drawing holds sensation in form without needing to label it. This episode explores what happens when you let sensation remain as it is, without collapsing it into language too soon. Drawing becomes a way of honoring the immediacy of experience: precise, unfiltered, and intact. In this episode: How sensation registers as mark Why refusing premature translation matters How drawing becomes a somatic archive Want to go deeper? The Body Holds Emotion—The Page Makes Room
There’s a point where words just stop working. You feel pressure in your chest, tightness in your throat, tension in your gut—but when asked how you’re doing, all you can manage is “fine.” The emotion doesn’t disappear. It just has nowhere to go. This week, we’re working with what’s unspoken—the buildup your body has been storing. Not by analyzing it. Not by naming it. But by creating a structured, embodied pathway for it to move. Drawing becomes that pathway. Not to explain, but to allow. Not to perform, but to release. Through breath, gesture, and mark, we make room for what hasn’t had space. In this episode: Why emotional holding shows up in the body before the mind How the page becomes a safe container when you don’t have one What happens when you release pressure instead of keeping it in Want to go deeper? Join me for the live BBMM session on September 6 (https://www.eileencubbage.com/about-somatic-drawing) where we’ll work with emotional holding directly through Body, Breath, Movement, and Mark. Drawing as a Grounding Ritual
There’s a particular kind of anxiety that doesn’t arrive like a storm. It builds like static—accumulating quietly, layer by layer, until you can’t hear yourself think. It’s not always sharp or explosive. Often, it’s background noise. And in that hum, your system starts to misfire. This week, we explore how grounding isn’t a concept. It’s not an affirmation, a meditation, or an idea. It’s a rhythm. A repetition. A sensory act that brings your body back into coherence. You’ll learn how to recognize when overstimulation has become your baseline, and how to use somatic drawing to create the rhythm your nervous system is craving—not to calm down, but to return. In this episode: – Why grounding is a physical skill, not a conceptual feeling – How repetition builds nervous system trust – A drawing practice to restore rhythm, presence, and inner pacing Want to go deeper? The extended session guides you through the body, breath, movement, and mark framework—with structured repetition that allows your system to settle. You’ll move through gestures that loop, breaths that anchor, and marks that give your nervous system a place to land. No performance. No critique. No need to feel “ready.” Just rhythm. Just return. Drawing Through Release
We often think the answer is more: more insight, more effort, more doing. But when your system is overwhelmed, more doesn’t help—it compounds. This week, we turn toward a different kind of creative alignment: one built on release. This episode explores how repetition—not effort—regulates the nervous system. Through somatic drawing, we practice what it means to stabilize rather than strive. Instead of chasing clarity, we build rhythmic return. You’ll learn how to recognize energetic overload before it becomes burnout, and how to use breath, movement, and mark as real-time anchors for coherence. This isn’t conceptual. It’s physical. Drawing becomes the tether. Not to express. Not to analyze. But to restore. In this episode: – Repetition is what regulates your nervous system—not mental control. – Drawing can act as a body anchor—not just an expressive outlet. – You don’t need new input—you need familiar return. Want to go deeper? The extended session guides you through body, breath, movement, and mark framework—with full emphasis on release and alignment. You’ll move slowly. You’ll repeat often. You’ll give your system the message it’s been waiting for: you’re allowed to let go. No critique. No performance. No pressure to produce. Just a mark. A breath. A gesture you can return to again and again. Keep drawing, Eileen Explore more: → Listen + subscribe: (drawingwithin.substack.com) Free weekly audio to reconnect to your body and creative flow. Tiny Shifts, Big Signals
We often think of energy as something big—momentum, drive, intensity. But creative energy doesn’t always begin in a surge. Sometimes, it begins in the smallest shift: the pause before movement, the release of unnecessary effort, the whisper of breath just before the mark. This week, we’re noticing what’s often ignored. The micro-holds in your body. The moment your attention drifts. The subtle ways your energy leaks or tightens before you even begin. We’re learning how to listen underneath—beneath the gesture, behind the line—to find the signals that shape your drawing before the drawing starts. Refining awareness at this level can transform how you show up. It sharpens your presence, clarifies your process, and brings ease into your creative rhythm. This isn’t about over-sensing—it’s about precision. About learning to trust the body’s intelligence in real time, so you’re not pushing, performing, or guessing. You’re responding. This episode includes: – How to recognize subtle tension before it becomes strain – Why your body’s micro-signals shape your creative timing – A somatic drawing practice to develop real-time responsiveness Want to go deeper? The full practice explores how your body’s smallest cues—micro-movements, subtle misalignments, and internal pacing—create a living feedback loop that sustains creative clarity. You’ll be guided through: – Breath-led awareness of energetic flickers + impulse – Drawing through sensation, not ideas – Movement prompts to shift from unconscious effort to conscious presence – Integration tools to carry refined attention into your day Share if this resonates and sign up for live classes. We’ll move through gentle breath, movement, sensation, and mark practice—leading into an extended sequence. No experience necessary. No performance, no critique, no cameras required. Where creative energy really begins
We often think of creative energy as something we generate—through willpower, momentum, or action. But what if it begins before any of that? This week, we’re slowing down to explore what happens before the first mark. Before movement. Before the idea forms. Where does creative energy actually begin in the body—and what shifts when you draw from that deeper root? You’ll learn how to sense your energetic foundation, so everything feels less forced and more fluid. This episode includes: why creative impulse doesn’t start in the hand how to locate your root before movement a somatic drawing practice to draw from within, not toward This space isn’t about performance. it’s about orientation. and when you begin from where your energy lives, creative rhythm becomes steadier—more honest, more sustainable. Creative energy isn’t constant (and that’s okay)
What if your rhythms didn’t need fixing? In this episode, we explore the myth of constant output—and how seasonal, somatic awareness can restore your creative connection. Instead of pushing through, you’ll practice meeting yourself where you are. We’ll talk about how creative energy actually moves (in rhythms, not straight lines), and why softening into what's present can open new space for possibilities. In this episode, you’ll hear:– why stillness is not the opposite of creativity, but part of its rhythm– how to tune into your energy without forcing momentum– a somatic drawing practice to help you reconnect with where you are now This space isn’t about making “perfect” work. It’s about listening more closely to yourself, learning to recognize your own energetic signals, and honoring the real, living pace of your creative cycle.
