Dreams Of Future Past

About Dreams Of Future Past

Throughout history, people have imagined what the future might look like — sometimes in bold visions, sometimes in whimsical predictions. *Dreams of a Future Past* is a podcast that explores how humanity has dreamed of the future through movies, technology, philosophy, and design. With an upbeat, conversational tone, the show will dive into iconic dreams of the future — from concept cars and world’s fairs, to sci-fi films and technology — and ask: what came true, what never did, and why? Along the way, listeners will discover the stories of inventors, businesspeople, and dreamers who helped shape our imagination of tomorrow.

James Bond: A License to Kill, A Vision of Tomorrow

Across more than six decades, 007 has been surrounded by technologies that once seemed like fantasy: miniature cameras, jet packs, underwater vehicles, and increasingly sophisticated forms of surveillance. But Bond's real contribution to futurism may be less about predicting individual gadgets and more about tapping into our fears of future technology. From Ian Fleming's postwar novels to the modern films, Bond's world also reflects a changing Britain and the decline of empire, the rise of America, and an increasingly dangerous and interconnected world. The films transformed those anxieties into spectacular entertainment, creating a fantasy in which the world's biggest problems could still be reduced to a single villain, a daring plan, and one man capable of stopping it. What He Got Right Biometrics and personalized security. Fingerprint recognition, palm-print authentication, and other forms of biometric identification became staples of the Bond universe before becoming commonplace in consumer technology The threats would keep changing. Nuclear weapons gave way to terrorism, environmental manipulation, information warfare, corporate power, and surveillance. Bond repeatedly reinvented its villains to reflect the fears of its era. Technology would become an extension of power. From nuclear weapons to satellites, hacking, surveillance, and artificial intelligence, Bond consistently recognized that whoever controls new technology can potentially control the world. What He Missed The invisible revolution. Bond's future is dominated by spectacular physical objects like cars, aircraft, weapons, and gadgets. The real technological revolution happened largely invisibly through software like cloud computing, networks, and data. The world became more interconnected and harder to divide into good and evil. Real geopolitical conflicts rarely offer Bond's clean distinction between hero and villain. Technology's unintended consequences. Bond usually treats technology as something that gives the hero an advantage. Today's relationship with technology is much messier: the same systems that provide convenience can enable surveillance, manipulation, addiction, and loss of privacy. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Bond's future is that the technology changes, but fears always remains. In the 1960s, the fear was nuclear war. In the 1980s, it was Cold War escalation and unchecked power. And in the 21st century, Bond increasingly confronts terrorism, cyberwarfare, surveillance, and the erosion of trust. The villains evolve because our anxieties evolve. Join McKay, Ian (named after Ian Fleming!!!), and Greg as they explore the villains, technologies, and the geopolitical anxieties of James Bond, and ask whether 007 has really been predicting the near future, or simply bringing our fears to life.

The House of Tomorrow and the Future of Living - Part 2

World War II transformed geopolitics and accelerated a technological revolution that found its way into the American home. In the decades that followed, architects, corporations, and futurists launched a new wave of innovations. From the factory-built Lustron Home and Buckminster Fuller's futuristic domes to Disneyland's House of the Future and Carousel of Progress, the post-war era imagined a future where technology would make life easier, more efficient, and ultimately more connected. Along the way, the home evolved from a building into a machine for living. What They Got Right Automation became a defining feature of the modern home. Smart appliances, voice assistants, and home automation fulfilled many of the promises first imagined in post-war concept homes and attractions like Disney's Carousel of Progress. Prefabrication continued to evolve. While projects like Lustron and Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House never achieved mass adoption, their ideas live on in today's modular homes, factory-built construction, and sustainable housing. Technology became integrated into everyday living. The future home increasingly relied on connected systems rather than standalone appliances, anticipating today's smart home ecosystems. What They Missed Privacy became a central concern. Futurists celebrated connected homes without foreseeing the tradeoffs of surveillance, data collection, and cybersecurity. Technology doesn't eliminate complexity. Despite decades of promises, modern homes still require maintenance, upgrades, and human judgment. Greater convenience often comes with greater dependence on complex systems. The post-war House of Tomorrow ultimately predicted many of the technologies and homes that we live in today. Join McKay, Ian, and Greg as they explore the post-war evolution of the House of Tomorrow, from atomic-age optimism to intelligent homes, and discover why the biggest changes weren't always the ones futurists expected.

The House of Tomorrow and the Future of Living - Part 1

Long before voice assistants and connected appliances, architects, inventors, and industrialists were imagining how technology would transform everyday life. At the turn of the last century, the "house of tomorrow" was defined by new technology, mass production, and bold new ideas about how people should live. From Sears mail-order houses to Le Corbusier's modernism and the spectacular homes showcased at the 1933 and 1939 World's Fairs, this was the era that laid the foundation for the future that followed. What They Got Right Electrification transformed daily life. The prediction that electricity would become the backbone of every home proved completely accurate, powering everything from lighting and refrigeration to entertainment and communication. Standardization and prefabrication. Sears Homes demonstrated that houses could be manufactured, shipped, and assembled using standardized parts, an idea that continues today in modular and prefab construction. The automobile reshaped the home. Visionaries correctly foresaw that garages, suburbs, and need for parking would become inseparable from the American home. What They Missed Environmental sustainability. These homes celebrated abundance and technological progress with little awareness of energy consumption, resource limits, or climate impacts. Homes are more than machines. While many architects pursued efficiency and standardization, they often underestimated the emotional, cultural, and personal reasons people resist radically new ways of living. The pre-war "House of Tomorrow" legacy wasn't any single invention, it was about free'ing humanity from the drugery of domestic work and creating more comfortable living spaces, setting the wheels in motion for major societal changes. Join McKay, Ian, and Greg as they explore the first great age of domestic futurism, when the future home wasn't yet smart or energy saving, but it was becoming unmistakably modern.
