[…] She didn't write to anyone she knew before moving to Three Chimneys, but to strangers, members of Parliament, newspaper editors, and secretaries of societies. Mother didn't do much of her own writing, only correcting proofs while sitting in the sun near the Russian gentleman. She would talk to him from time to time. The children wanted to show how much they cared about this man, who had been sent to prison and Siberia just for writing a beautiful book about poor people. They could smile at him, and they did, but they didn't want to overdo it, because smiling too much can start to look silly. So they tried other ways to show their kindness, bringing him flowers, until a spot in the garden was surrounded by little bunches of clover, roses, and canterbury bells. […]
